Are golfers & race car drivers athletes? Bowlers? Ping pong players?
Bowlers & Golfers are much closer to being athletes than Car Drivers.
Its also stupid to lump Ping Pong Players in with any of them because they are 100% athletes

True, that's why I think it is a sport. It takes endurance. But not necessarily athleticism

You couldn't do it. And it isn't just heat...those cars are a completely different animal. I'd be willing to bet you couldn't hold a street car with ac and power steering on one of those high banked tracks for 20 laps at high speed. I understand your position, you voice it all the time, but you don't know anything about those cars.

What is your definition of physical exertion ?
Picking up poker chips, holding cards, using body language. What is your definition. In other words, when does it become enough to become a sport?
See I simply look at a sport as an athletic competition in which there is a clear winner based on a set of rules. 100 meter dash might be the simplest form of a sport. There is no opinion about who what the rules themselves define who won.
If I do a 720 and you do a 720 why did I win and you didn't. It is because someone thought your 720 looked more correct, or more stylish, or more difficult. It becomes a judgment on what looked better. I am not saying what the dude has accomplished isn't amazing, or he isn't athletic. I just feel that it is a different type of accomplishment than someone like Roger Federer who beat people at an athletic game if that makes any sense.

It isn't the same thing.. it's like saying nfl linemen aren't athletes because receivers and backs run 4.4 40s and the big guys can't. A tennis player, a football player and a snowboarder are all different kinds of athletes.

Well the gist of the OP is that he is the most dominant in his sport. Whether it's a sport or not is fairly irrelevant to the point of the thread.
And since this thread is about shaun white, your example doesn't really work. He routinely throws down tricks that have never been done before in competition.
What makes him so "dominant" is the fact that he puts those runs down at the X games. He does it when the lights are on and everyone is watching. #clutchgene

It is a sport. It requires athletic ability to play and there is a clear winner based on the rules of the game. You don't play baseball for three hours and a panel says well I think the Yankees looked better than the Reds. The game tells you who won. The only judgement calls are the ones enforcing the rules of the game.
Posted on 1/27/13 at 11:08 pm to cssamerican
Every single play/pitch is a judgement call. Snowboarding is more of a sport than baseball is.
Posted on 1/27/13 at 11:13 pm to cssamerican
I see what you are trying to say, I just completely disagree
Two men can fight and it can be EASY to see who won. Just because the other didn't get knocked out doesn't mean there can't be a clear winner.
ETA: Now that I'm thinking about it, I can't fathom you saying that ping pong or bowling is more of a sport than snowboarding.

Stop lumping Ping Pong in with Bowling

I want to say no...But, I guess it depends if you define stuffing you face as an athletic ability

Hey guys, football isn't a sport because penalties are a judgement call and plays that are reviewed are decided by a third party.
