Why I'm Not Rooting For 'I'll Have Another'
LINK
I'm rooting for the horse but the fact that 2 year old accusations haven't been resolved is pretty pathetic oversight by the horse racing industry.

Last summer, I'll Have Another's trainer Doug O'Neill was formally sanctioned after one of his racehorses at Hollywood Park in California tested positive for illegal drugs. A year before, in 2010, O'Neill was punished for administering an illegal performance-enhancing concoction to a horse he ran in the prestigious Illinois Derby -- the third time he had been accused of giving a horse what is known as a milkshake. Four months later, he was accused again of giving a milkshake to a horse in California.
Over 14 years and in four different states, O'Neill received more than a dozen violations for giving his horses improper drugs. O'Neill's horses also have had a tendency to break down. According to an analysis by The New York Times, the horses he trains break down or show signs of injury at more than twice the rate of the national average.
quote:
Nationally, thoroughbred horses break down or show signs of injury at a rate of 5.1 per thousand starts, according to the Times's analysis of more than 150,000 races over the past three years. In more than 2,300 starts, horses trained by O'Neill show a breakdown or injury frequency more than double that rate, at 12.0 per thousand starts.
"It's a horrible statistic to be associated with," O'Neill said.
In comparison, horses in the care of Motion -- one of the trainers without a single drug violation and who will race Went the Day Well in the Preakness Stakes next Saturday -- have started nearly 1,900 races and broken down or showed signs of injury in just 0.5 per thousand starts.

I am not going through the descriptions of his violations again. Milkshake test is something oneill thinks he can fight and most of the trainers you love are probably just as much if not more prone to BAD violations. Every state has different withdrawal times, etc.
I'm guessing you get all your racing knowledge from the new York times. Spend some time on the backside before you start discussing things you have no clue about..
As far as the breakdown level, oneill started at the bottom with lots of claimers. Usually the cheaper horses have SOME issue, even if it's just lack of speed. Graham motion started out as sheppard's assistant, so he always had ready clients with nice horses. I love graham motion and Jonathan Shepard. They are 2 of my favorite trainers, but the didn't have to claw their way from the bottom up.

Dude, I was posting an article...so people could discuss and yes, so I could get other opinions and learn more about it.
No need to be so smarmy about explaining while you disagree with this guy's opinion or taking some offense to it being posted.

Aspy, I am not sure if this is the appropriate thread to ask and I know you probably have mentioned it on here (one of the boards) what your involvement is with horse racing, but do you mind if I ask what exactly you do?
Does your family have race horses?
I am just curious because although I am a "casual fan" of horse racing, I have always loved the ambiance of the sport and one of these days I am going to take the time to learn more about it.

My husband is a trainer
Zamora, sorry. I'm just tired of all the shite the ny times is throwing everywhere.
Most of oneill's violations are for legal drugs, just too much in the system. Every state has different rules, and they change them all the time. Louisiana just change their bute % this year.
I feel bad for the guy right now.

He killed a nice allowance field on the Preakness undercard.
I couldn't watch, but I think his mo is to go to the front. Hope someone goes with him.

I hope IHA does it. Nobody thought he would win the Preakness (including me). I hope he finally gets the respect he deserves (and Guiterez).
Anybody have the odds on IHA winning the Triple Crown? (not the Belmont race odds)

I don't follow the plastic tracks too much.
I hate synthetics.
I'll check on that and let you know.

What makes you dislike a horse?
Posted on 5/21/12 at 10:59 am to PortCityTiger24
I'm a girl. Sometimes I just dislike one for no reason, or love a loser for no reason because he's pretty.
I know a lot, but that doesn't stop me from betting every flashy chestnut with lots of white.
I will say that I didn't like somEthing about how he was put together and I never like to see a 3 yr old in front wraps.

Got my flight booked and got my Belmont tickets. Buddy of mine in NYC took the train out to the racetrack yesterday and stood in line to buy them in person since they weren't going on sale online until this morning. Sold out within 30 minutes.
