Several of the country’s major sports leagues will negotiate huge media deals in 2020

Expect a ton of sports media activity in 2020, with several of the country’s major sports leagues negotiating their media deals. Here’s how I see these deals shaking out next year.

SEC Moves to ABC
Fox and NBC will express a lot of interest in CBS’s Saturday afternoon SEC package. CBS will fight to keep it, but ESPN will pick up the rights for ABC for around $300 million per year, a massive increase from the $55 million CBS currently plays. The SEC will ultimately decide it wants more scheduling flexibility by having one partner rather than dividing its rights across two.

NFL Negotiates Media Deals
First, the NFL will finalize its CBA, which will add a 17th game to the schedule. Then the league office will focus on its TV deals, which will break the bank. I expect the TV networks will pay on average around 60%-70% more than the current deals if those agreements mirror the current ones and go nine years. Shorter deals will see smaller increases. Formal announcements may not come until 2022, but by this time next year, we will know how the packages will look.
Good read

We'll need the extra money to help pay for Muschamp's buyout.

So everyone can expect their cable package bill to increase.

Netflix Buys Sunday Ticket
Amazon, ESPN+ and DAZN will all put in bids to carry NFL Sunday Ticket when its contract with DirecTV ends in 2021. But Netflix will pick up the rights as part of a shocking bid that shores up the company’s programming in the face of growing competition from Disney+ and others.
pretty bad arse.

My only gripe would really be with YouTube tv locally in NOLA.
No local ABC contract currently which means I won't be able to record SEC/LSU broadcasts next year.
Otherwise, I'd love to routinely have Fowler & Herbstreit for a primetime game as opposed to Brad & Gary in a baking-hot afternoon game.

Not sure how I feel about the abc. It has some definite perks. I like the broadcast duo of Fowler and Herbstreit for the prime time game and it continues to incentivize the espn hype for the primary game. Also as an Lsu fan I’d prefer our biggest games at night rather than afternoon. I hate the CBS commercials and I can’t stand Gus Johnson on Fox.
With that said I don’t like having what essentially becomes a monopoly shaping the overall narrative and opinion.
I wouldn’t mind NBC taking a stab. Sets up notre dame at 1:30ish going into prime time SEC matchup.

Whatever gets the SEC game of the week in prime time instead of at 2:30 (as long as when LSU isn't playing in that game they're still allowed to play in prime time
)
I wonder if the SEC moved to ESPN when does ESPN/ABC hit their max capacity. I have to think the other conferences won't like having to compete against the SEC for a prime spot each week.

How is this gonna happen? The deal doesn't expire til '23 and CBS has flat out refused to renegotiate even after SEC expansion in '12.

Sec will stay at cbs. They will come up with the money.

doesn't the 3:30 normally get better ratings?
and it's been a tradition for a while now?
I prefer the 3:30 SEC GOTY than an 8pm game
but that's just me.

You’re right. The 3:30 games typically get higher ratings because the late afternoon is the only time of the day when everybody is home on Saturday. Only a few select mega games that move the needle draw good ratings on Saturday nights.

Agree. Ill take 330 all day. Makes it much easier to travel to and from the same day.

I always just assumed the time slot on a Saturday.
Why TV shows premiere on Thursday nights not Friday or Saturday nights.

I couldn't give 2 shits about any of that. I want LSU playing no earlier than 6:00pm local time for every game.
