we are actually in a transition period from the old guard our young guys right now. playing and getting eliminated in 3 games this world cup is nothing as far as developing our players goes, but i do think it wouldve been nice for them to get some experience playing together on this kind of world stage tho

It was a shock, but it would have been unlikely that we would make it past the group stage. Would have been nice for a few guys to get the experience, though.

While there's some truth in this, it isn't everything. We typically have the most athletic teams in the WC (there's stats to back it up but I'm lazy today). It's the technical aspect we lack as previously mentioned. But it's improving.

Yep. The one strength of the USMNT has always been athleticism. We are usually the more athletic team in the match.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean anything. See: Ivory Coast, Ghana.

It really is one of the dumbest opinions that gets regurgitated over and over that if our "best athletes" played we would be one of the top teams in the world.

They wouldve received the same coaching that all of our other athletically gifted players received. You could put a million world class athletes in the US soccer infrastructure of the past 30 years and you wouldn't end up with anyone nearly as good as Cristiano Ronaldo or Messi

Yeah, our problem isn't athletes.

people said we had no shot to make it out in 2014 and we did.

For whatever reason, we typically turn it on against teams better than us. We have had a horrible habit of playing up to our competitions standards, both up and below.

Ratings are in
quote:

In the first real heavyweights match-up so far, the 11 AM PT starting Portugal vs. Spain game scored a 2.6/8 result for Fox in metered market ratings. For one, even with the time zone differences, that’s way way up to the tune of 75% from what the Russia winning opener drew. Secondly, showing that the fans are there if the marquee teams are playing, the 3-3 tie has easily proven to be the highest rated World Cup 2018 game so far stateside and helped pushed the tournament to just over a 1.5 rating in the early metrics of Fox and Fox Sports 1.

Young adults in the US are just as interested in watching the World Cup as they are the World Series and NBA Finals.

We played like shite in 2 of the 3 group stage matches in 2014. We should have lost to Ghana, got dominated by Germany, and should have beaten Portugal. Then we turned around and got dominated by Belgium in the group stage, but managed to keep it close and lost in extra time. We played like shite throughout the 2014 WC.

and this is where we start talking about how misleading these polls are. do we really think people in this country are just as interested in watching the game that is about to start, nigeria and croatia, as they are in watching lebron and kd and steph in the finals?

whats that poll finding? i can believe that number when it comes to watching america in the world cup, or maybe even the world cup championship. but i have a hard time believing anything else

Absolutely

Ghana easily had more athletic players than the US

Usmnt is filled with mid tier athletes

This is where the argument is skewed big time. Most of our team are superior athletes compared to say Messi or Iniesta, but they will dribble the ball around us all day long. Same with Ghana or any athletic team. The only position that's almost all athletic is GK,and we always had a world class one there until now.

And to counter your point about Ghana being more athletic, freaking Clint Dempsey ran past their entire team with the ball and scored in the first 30 seconds of the game in 2014

You could actually argue some of our most athletically gifted players have been some of our worst. ??

Or at least...most disappointing. Nothing against Maurice Edu or my boy Eddie Johnson but they were pretty lacking in the skills department but they got by mostly on speed and quickness relative to their size.

And who could forget Brek fricking Shea.
