Only 4 years ago and the WNBA ratings were better than MLS.

MLS will never catch up to the NFL, NBA, MLB, ot the NHL is in this country. The players who play in MLS are this countries 6th-7th best athletes. Kind of like a junior high basketball team who will never compete with varsity.

Well, I like soccer but I also agree that soccer will likely never catch the other major sports leagues in terms of popularity. However, this argument seems odd to me. MLS is kinda like the minor leagues of soccer. It would be like saying minor league baseball will never catch NFL in terms of popularity.

I know here in DC, none of the local sport shows talk about the DC United. They have a brand new stadium opening up in less than a month and there is no talk on that.

It was the mid-1970s when soccer became noticed in the US, and it was predicted then that soccer would overtake the NFL, etc. Nope.

Doesn't help that the team has been one of the most poorly run teams over the last decade.

Well one of the two leagues is clearly improving.

Don't know much about them other than the fact they are horrible. They must have a decent draw of fans in order to build a new stadium. It look like it will be very nice and it is right down from the waterfront (also a block or two from Nationals stadium).

People love sensationalism. It was never going to grow without a good foundation. It's partly why the NASL quickly flamed out back then. MLS was only started in 1996 and had a few as 10 teams as recently as 2004.

They claim they averaged almost 18k last year, but that number is most likely high. It's tough to get a good atmosphere in RFK Stadium with that few people there. The new stadium should be a turning point for them.

I think the new stadium will have around 20,000 seats.

Here is a current picture of the stadium.

It looks to be a nice stadium, but the owners are going to need to keep any momentum going and show a bigger commitment. That starts with properly staffing the front office.

The idea that all NFL, NBA and (especially) MLB guys are just elite all around athletes is one of the biggest myths of our time. Sure many are, but most are just good at what they do.
