The SEC is fine in football, they should add Duke and North Carolina to improve as a basketball league. If the SEC wanted 16 teams I say add Duke, North Carolina, Florida State and Virginia Tech.
SEC West:
LSU
Arkansas
Alabama
Auburn
Miss. State
Ole Miss
Florida State
Kentucky
SEC East:
Tennessee
Florida
Georgia
S. Carolina
Duke
North Carolina
Vandy
Virginia Tech

hell....no.
Why dilute what you are best at? We are a football league, that is what pays the bills, and we should continue as such.

Wildcats said it best. "It's the sport of kings...better than diamond rings..."
Also, I don't think Baylor and Tech are a package deal. Definitely not Baylor. The addition of Texas/OU/TAMU/TT is a lay-up. Of course, this has almost no chance of happening.

North Carolina is improving in football. Plus, adding FSU and VT would make the SEC that much stronger in football.

take it for what it's worth, but the guys on 570 AM in L.A. were saying that it's definitely a package deal for the 4 Texas schools to stick together and that it's even heavily pressured to do so by Texas politicos....and this is the main reason they would go to the Pac-10 and not the SEC. They say the SEC won't be strongarmed into taking weak sisters and can just poach FSU, Miami, GT, and Clemson.
these guys HATE the SEC so they have no reason to kiss our arse.

oh, and imagine the SEC baseball tourney if we were to add FSU, Miami, GT and CLemson. Holy shite....it would be tougher than the CWS some if not most years.

Have you seen the Baylor thread? If that pathetic appeal is legit, I'd hardly say Baylor is included in any package deal with the others.
ETA: I just cited a tiger droppings thread as a source. Not a good day for me...
Also, I think they will look to see if the Texas schools/OU can be added, the fall back would be East coast schools. They could pick up the phone and poach those guys before cocktail hour. No need to rush on that end.

You're going to hear all sorts of opinions but I think this one is wrong.
I think time was that A&M and Texas were definitely tied together but it's no longer out of the question for them to end up in different conferences
Texas Tech is a less powerful lobby but probably has enough swag to hang on and land a spot with Texas (and A&M) if they went to the PAC - given the power of Texas (and to a lesser extent A&M)
Baylor is a private school and is a matter of preference not necessity for the other Texas schools to take care of

College basketball is a fading star and is irrelevant when compared to college football.

Again, don't leave VT out. They are a much better fit for us than Miami.
I'd be shocked if we chose Miami over VT. We'd own Florida anyway if we get FSU. We don't need Miami but we need that Virginia/DC television market.

i REALLY don't see what we'd gain by adding VT. that would make no sense at all
a transplant market
and tv ratings don't mean shite to the SEC

miami seems to be a significantly better draw than either fsu or va tech for nationally interest. judging by the ratings

What?

Virginia/DC is a much better TV market for college football than Miami.
I mean I'd rather have VT than Clemson or FSU to be quite frank. I'd rank them (in terms of desirability)
1. VT
2. GT
3. Clemson
4. FSU
5. Miami
shite - I put VT first because we already have Atlanta 90% anyway. We already have Miami and SC and NW Florida 90% anyway.
VT is virgin territory for the SEC.

well, let me rephrase
our ratings won't matter for at least 10 years, and likely approximately 14

based on what?
the fact that maryland, UVA, and VT are top revenue producers? erm...
DC is a transplant market and it barely supports local CFB

Same could be said for GT and Miami. And we already own the Atlanta market and have tons of SEC fans in Miami area to boot.
There are literally no SEC fans in DC or Virginia and that would change overnight with VT.

no shite. i've already said that about ATL

exactly. no reason to expand there for this mythical "market"

there aren't that many VT fans there who support the program either

But I don't think anybody has ever argued that SEC expansion was on our front burner SFP.
It's clearly always been considered more of a "keeping up with the Joneses" situation for us than any proactive poaching.
We can't let the Big 10 and Pac 10 grow to 16 team monsters and just do nothing. Adding 4 quality teams will pay for itself in terms of added playoff revenue and a re-negotiated TV deal with ESPN (which WOULD happen). As far as the increased TV market footprints - that's a nice feather in the cap which is why you want to be smart about picking the schools you invite.
SEC would still be hands-down the premier conference if we added 4 from FSU/GT/Mia/VT/Clem. Would the same be the case if we stood pat at 12? I think it would be pretty dicey.

quote:that's not really true. Penn State and VT, UVA seem to be the big dogs, but there is a decent base for SEC. If VT joined the SEC, it would definitely create more SEC interest around here
