They just reopened the main track yesterday after horse number 21 was killed a couple weeks ago.

Another thoroughbred horse died at Santa Anita on Thursday, officials from the famed California racetrack said, bringing the total number of fatalities to 22 since Christmas. The 3-year-old filly, Princess Lili B, trained by David Bernstein, suffered a catastrophic injury during a workout shortly before 9 a.m. and had to be put down, Santa Anita and state officials said.

The track closed for a week following the 21st death since Dec. 26, but it reopened Monday following inspections and dirt sampling, according to Eric Sondheimer of the Los Angeles Times. The track was supposed to resume races on March 22.

Three months? Wtf are they doing over there? Making the horses trot through tires?

Jesus..
How often do horses die at other tracks?
This seems unimaginably high.

Glad I'm not a horse at that joint:

While deadly accidents are a constant threat in horse racing, the number of recent fatalities stands out. There were 10 horse deaths at Santa Anita from Dec. 26 to March 5 in 2017-18, 11 in 2016-17 in that same period and 16 in 2015-16, according to data from the California Horse Racing Board.

At this point it makes me wonder if owners are sending horses there to die and have an insurance claim paid out.

A few horses loaded up and left for Oaklawn this week. Which has caused quite the stir since the Rebel now has a split field with the additional horses.
