Yea, we're down 2 points after day #1. I wonder why we should even show up tomorrow.

At least this thread has provided some comedic relief.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. I was completely convinced that the first days 8 matches were pre-planned

I thought that too. At least that would've been a strategy...I would disagree with it, but it's a plan at least. Now he's saying that he didn't have the alternate shot matches pre-planned.

Also, I think his 4 ball matches for tomorrow are a little WTF as well. I'm still shocked that he's putting Mahan and Furyk out there...together...in a Ryder Cup. I wouldn't put money on those two beating the Gleneagles head pro and the assistant in a 4 ball tomorrow.

We will need to overcome our own captain in this one. WTH are Floyd and sticker and whoever the other vice captain is doing??? Picking daisies.

I'm not giving up yet..if we can get 4 out of 8 pts available tomorrow we have a punchers chance on Sunday.

Looking at the matchups I'm thinking it will be 7.5-4.5 going into the afternoon matches.

No one is giving up. But we had a great start today, and our captain managed to let the momentum we had get away with his pairings. Then our players started playing poorly. Europe paired the #1 and #3 players in the world today in 2 matches, and only came away with a half point, yet they're still whipping our asses right now. Call me crazy for being skeptical.

Did it ever occur to you and everyone else, that perhaps the Euros played better than we did in the afternoon matches? They hit the shots and made the putts, we didn't.

Outside of the Rickie/Walker v Rory/Sergio match, that's true. Rory and Sergio shouldn't have even been in it the way they played.

Mahan and Johnson actually played the best out of the 4 US teams, Stenson and Rose just played lights out.

It honestly really doesn't matter who he plays or pairs with each other .. Give White TW a break

Watson is employing this exact strategy. So far so good.

hat is it about some of these Euros that makes them play so well in Ryder cup? We need to figure that out and replicate it. These guys are total fricking head-cases in a major on Sunday and can't ever get it done:

Westwood
Sergio
Stenson
Poulter

I remember years ago Garcia saying one of the things he loves about the Ryder Cup is you can hit a 9 on a hole but at the end of the day you are only one down.

Of course that's what happened...that's why we're down 5-3. You know what happened when Mississippi St beat LSU last weekend? They played better than LSU. Recognizing that your opponent played better than you is the first step, but you won't get better if you can't figure out why.

Interesting article on the mindset of the two captains:

LINK

quote:

That doesn’t mean there isn’t room for analysis. Rather than certain maneuvers, though, the analysis should grade the attitude as a whole. Did the captains play it cool under duress? Did they make rash decisions? Did they stick to the original plan?

We’re just two sessions into the 40th edition of the Ryder Cup, but already these questions can be posed toward European captain Paul McGinley, whose team owns a 5-3 advantage, and United States captain Tom Watson. Just after each announced their Saturday morning fourball pairings, it was easy to answer some of these questions, simply by listening.

McGinley: “I'm looking at the big picture, something I can't reveal at the moment, but you'll see on Sunday night. I'm working to a plan. I'll reveal a little bit more Sunday night.”

Watson: “The pairings that are made for tomorrow morning I think are strong pairings, as strong as we can put out there and we'll see what happens."

There it is. Confidence versus doubt. Calm versus anxious. Planning versus reassessing.

build a lead going to sunday, hold off your more exp guys for the later rounds and let your youngsters play with emotion and try to wrap it up for you. Holding your big dogs til the end gives you the reassurance you need.

I think running the weaker players out early on Sunday in '99 got the momentum in the US side. I doubt they save all the big guns for late on Sunday.

Turns out old Capitain Watson is the wild card everybody's been yammerin about.
Like a guy trying to make a BLT with no bread.
Please old man. Put the damn thing together, and make it good.
