What's a "core" player? Are you talking about the points list for auto qualifying? The reason it's done like that is because the PGA of America runs this show, and they want their championship to also decide the players for their other marquee event. I'm not saying I necessarily agree with that, but that's the reason for it.

best we can do now is 1-3 in the foursomes and end the day down a full point. Fowler and Walker must hold on to this one. Captain needs to put these lifeless robots on the bench all day tomorrow.

That's the difference in the Ryder Cup. The Euros make so many more clutch putts than we do. That was an easy 5 foot right to left putt Johnson just made look difficult.
