Honest question here..... How can the offense counter this in any way?

They will likely go to the 12 players in defensive formation rule the NFL has making it a pre-snap penalty.

other words the time for the play should only come off of the clock if the play is accepted.

So the games will be 45-1:00 longer?

Making it a pre-snap penalty alleviates the issue.

This feels really cheap but why don't more teams do this

I’m guessing there are only a few niche scenarios where it’s a worthwhile gamble, otherwise it’s a free play for a deep pass/Hail Mary and an untimed down.

Rick Neuheisel said given the right situation, most coaches know to do this....it's not a hidden secret to coaches, only fans.

He said it happened to him at UCLA.

UCLA was on the 3 yard line with 8 seconds left before the half and ASU snuck 13 guys on the field, UCLA didn't gain a yard and with only 3 seconds left (after the failed play and the measly half the distance to the goal penalty) were forced to settle for a FG.

Guarantee he would have brought it up during a press conference if it was intentional.

No. You have to make it seem like it was a mistake because if it was "intentional" the refs could flag you for unsportsmanlike conduct and a 15 yard penalty.

And if he cops to it in a press conference, the next time he tries there's a chance that a ref might throw the flag by thinking its intentional.

Thats why you dont throw 3 extra guys out there.

While that's a great heads up play by Dan Lanning, and that's for sure a great way to use a loophole to your advantage.

This kind of seems really stupid also. The clock should have been reset before the foul.

Dan Lanning was asked about it and he basically confirmed it.

The outcome is pretty slanted toward the defense. It should be penalty yards plus time added back to the clock if it’s under 2 minutes.

Ive always said you should just tackle every receiver when minimal time left. 5 yard penalty worth the 5-10 seconds lost

I believe the 49ers did this right before halftime a couple years ago. Offense was inside the 5 yard line, they tackled every wide receiver, penalty was half the distance to the goal. Clock ran down to 0:00 so the offense went for a field goal on an untimed down.

I say how they do 10 second run offs add 10 seconds - this would never be an issue again
