Why does it have to be fixed? It’s a penalty but the other team understands and accepts the punishment. It happens more than people realize.

No different than delay of game on a punt to back up 5 yards or running out of end zone for a safety to run clock down. Intentional grabbing a wr when beat to prevent a TD. Hell, spiking the ball to stop the clock is a comparable sitution. No penalty involved but you’re taking advantage of the rules by incurring a negative play bc the outcome is favorable to current scenario .

If the refs see the 12 men before the snap, do they blow the play dead? I was always confused about this one. It seems sometimes they let the play go and other times they blow it dead before the snap (2019 Bama at Auburn ending).

If the bills would have done this against KC with 12 seconds left....

NFL changed the rule to not allow for this to happen after Coughlin did it multiple times in the second pats / giants SB

Am i misremembering, or did there used to be separate penalties for having too many men on the field (ie guy trying to run off late) and illegal participation (12 actually playing)?

Tennessee was called for Illegal Participation against LSU during the 2010 debacle.

How does an offense counteract this on the fly? Not sure there’s an answer other than committing a false start and having offsetting penalties.

in the short term I think you treat it as offsides…your QB has to know it/be signaled/told and you get a free play for a risky throw down the field into coverage or to the end zone to get a TD or PI with no risk of an interception

Ive always said you should just tackle every receiver when minimal time left. 5 yard penalty worth the 5-10 seconds lost

Wasn’t the former a 5-yard and the latter 15?

Current rule in high school under federation rules.

This is going to have to be changed. What’s keeping him from putting 22 guys on the field.

15 yard penalty that puts osu in field goal range.

Either spike the ball and take the penalty with only 1 second running off….or take a deep shot with the free play

Lanning was playing chess while day was playing with his Leggo set

And as pointed out by a buckeyes podcast, Chip Kelly is calling plays, so he has no excuses to not know the rules or not being able to manage the situation since he isn’t exactly completely involved in the offense.

Interesting how this board is jerking off at this as brilliant coaching b/c Lanning did it to Day but had it been Kiffin doing it to beat Kelly and LSU…

They should make it so that if you accept the penalty the time is put back on the clock.

In other words the time for the play should only come off of the clock if the play is accepted.
