I saw a situation in the Madison Prep-Brother Martin game tonight that I’m sure happens a lot

Late in the 4th quarter BM was near the MPA goal line at like the 3 yard line with the time ticking. The lead was 28-0 BM and the game was well in hand. BM went for it on 4th down and an incomplete pass turned the ball over.

My question is this… why is it such bad taste for coaches to take the 3 points for a field goal in this situation? I wouldn’t consider going from 28 to 31 that egregious and besides, in the first game of the season the kicker might need reps

No such thing as running the score up.

It's all stupid to me. Just take a knee and you don't have to run the FG team on the field for an extra point, and you don't have to kick off and run more plays. Just a big waste of time for everyone in the stadium.

This early in the year, getting the practice for special teams kicking the fg would be beneficial and not “running it up” at all.

There’s an unwritten rule that if you’re up “big” late and don’t really need any more points it’s better to go for it on 4th instead of get 3 “meaningless” points with a field goal. It’s just one of those that’s the way it is things in sports that has no real meaning but everyone does it.

Score every chance you get. If the other team cannot stop you, then that’s on them.

I would pull the starters. If running the 3rd string rb up the middle results in running up the score so be it.

You should run a base run play and not pass the ball. If you pick up the first down on a basic run play then shame on the defense.

The correct call in that situation is to just kneel on the ball. Dont go for it and dont kick the FG.

Eff that. Run it up the gut. If they don't stop you oh well.

Unwritten rules are dumb. It’s an even bigger slap in the face to kneel it there than to just do a token handoff up the middle even though you’re “not supposed to be trying to score”

What’s the difference between winning 28-0 and 35-0?

If Brother Martin was running trick plays up 60 with 2 minutes left I would say that’s a dick move but I don’t have an issue with playing hard and running your offense

Sam Wyche once responded to a running up the score question with something like "if you promise me they will quit trying to score then I will quit trying to score".

In college and Pro ball I tend to agree. But High Schools don't recruit. They have what they have. At some point both sides know the game is over and you can be very predictable with back ups and get the game over with. To not is being an arse hole. And no reason for it.

Depends on how the other guy is playing the game. BAMA is up a lot in the 4th and Coach Saban likes to call the dogs. But most of the time the other coach wants to keep his starters in. That would be unacceptable to me. If the opponent continues to throw the ball with starters in then you get the full gameplan regardless of who's playing.
