I'll give ND credit. When it comes to academic-related violations, they don't mess around. Their punishments are very steep.

Notre Dame would struggle to beat Vandy on a consistent basis now. I don't even think about ND anymore. They are a far cry from the powerhouse they were when I was growing up.

ND was really good from 1987-1993. Easily could have won three national titles, but only captured one.
Just an above average program since the mid 90s though.

Everybody, every decade since 1920's - knows Notre Dame.
Everyone...everybody, ever year.
Nobody on the West Coast or North West had heard of LSU football and Death Valley...until ESPN and SEC football in the early 90's.
Certainly had no clue in the 80's...nobody talked about SEC football nationally.
It was all Big 10 and Rose Bowl.
I knew Miami, Penn State, USC, Michigan, Ohio State and sometimes Alabama.
That was college football in the 1980's. Nobody talked about the SEC...it was like another country...the little coverage it had were guys with NASCAR accents.
