Damn.. Not one team from N America even qualified? And only three teams total from the entire Western hemisphere?

Yep. The US had 3 different chances to qualify and blew it every time.

Americas 1
quote:

USA had home advantage in the Americas 1 play-off against Uruguay and they made it count, winning 19-16. But the Eagles were left to rue letting a 16-point lead slip as Los Teros dominated the second leg in Montevideo to win 34-15 and qualify for the Rugby World Cup as Americas 1 for the first time in their history, 50-34 on aggregate.

Americas 2
quote:

The home-and-away encounters in July 2022 between Chile and USA for the Americas 2 ticket were fitting of the occasion and the prize at stake – a place in Pool D along with England, Argentina, Japan and Samoa at Rugby World Cup 2023.

Having lost the first leg at home 22-21, Chile looked down and out in their bid to qualify for their first Rugby World Cup when they conceded three early tries in the return match in Colorado to leave themselves 20 points behind in the tie.

However, Los Condores fought back valiantly and Santiago Videla’s late penalty, which gave them the lead for the first time, ensured they broke the hearts of home fans to claim a 31-29 victory on the night and a place at Rugby World Cup 2023.

In the 1st game, USA was up 22-14 with time running out. They gave up a try with time expired (rugby goes after time is up until the next stoppage). In match #2 USA was up 19-0 after 30 minutes and had a 29-21 lead after 60. They lost on aggregate by 1 point to fricking Chile.

Even after all of that, they still had 1 more shot at the final qualifying spot with a winner take all tournament against Hong Kong, Kenya, and Portugal. They win the 1st two matches and enter the final match against Portugal with tied in the standings. With time expired Portugal kicks a penalty field goal to tie the match 16-16 and advance based on overall points differential.

Late match meltdowns cost the USA a RWC spot all 3 times.

A few of those matches were some of the worst rugby I've ever seen from the US. Truly just uninspiring rugby.

Probably TMI...I was actually in Dubai and was going to go the Portugal match...but Dehli belly from India caught up with me and was not able to make it.

So, after review, crapping every 30 minutes was more fun than going to that match

France vs New Zealand opener bump! We're live. New Zealand is hitting the line hard and fast. Exciting start so far.

Kiwis leaving a lot of points on the pitch so far in the 1st half. And France is taking advantage of the New Zealand penalty count and happy to take the 3 every time New Zealand gives up a penalty in kickable range.

New Zealand is dominating in free play and territory, but France has the advantage in the set piece and where it counts (scoreboard).

NZ scrum has been pretty shaky so far

Yep. NZ scrum just got away with collapsing that one. Just submarined (straight to ground) on the losehead side. Then a free kick. France is going to keep trying to draw penalties in the scrum.

Wow! What a try saving tackle, punches the ball out just inches away from a France try.

Sucks for me because I have a Penaud Try bet.

eta: Got it that time! No TMO!

Normally I'd agree. But France really has them on the back foot right now.

Only game that looks like it'll be worth watching today is England Argentina

Namiba got lit up by Italy and I doubt Romania is going to fair much better against Ireland nor Geogria against Australia (although I could swe Geogria being a dark horse)

Don't sleep on Georgia. Those big ugly Caucasians (literally) play a very physical game.

Guess the reverse statement is true too. Don't sleep on Australia. 5 match losing streak coming in but all against top opponents. Still a big gap between the Tier 1 and Tier 2 nations.
