NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell's new contract, which expires in 2024, will be his final extension with the league, NFL spokesman Joe Lockhart confirmed to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport at the Winter League Meeting on Wednesday.

Lockhart added that Goodell will spend time helping the league identify his potential successor at commissioner over the next seven years.

Goodell signed a five-year contract extension with the league last week, according to a memo sent to NFL owners from Compensation Committee. In the memo, the Compensation Committee stated the contract "has been signed by the Commissioner and by [Falcons owner] Arthur Blank, on behalf of the League entities."

Goodell, 58, succeeded Paul Tagliabue in September of 2006. He first joined the league as an intern back in 1982.

Stays long enough to ride the league through another bitter labor dispute and then rides off into the sunset

How does one command $40m a year if nobody else will pay him $40m a year? Would he have walked away if the offer was only $30m? Who would fork out that kind of cash for him?

He's in a bit of a niche market. His knowledge and experience won't fetch him that much at F500 companies. NBA and MLB aren't going to hire him for that much.

the NFL will basically cease to exist in its current form by like 2030 anyway so he's milking the league dry until he bounces out

Probably because there won't be an NFL by 2025.

It will certainly be around, but it will look more like Arena League or Canadian at the least.

This is my question on Goodell. I mean shite Drew Brees makes around 25mil/year and there are maybe 3-4 people in the world that can do what he can do on the football field. There are literally thousands of people in the world that can perform the business functions that Goodell does.

I have never understood his compensation. He has one of the easiest executive jobs in the world.

It's not so much about how many other people can do what Goodell does but how many other options does Goodell have? A good CEO has tons of options. Good players can get paid by other teams. Goodell on the other hand isn't going to land a $25m/year job elsewhere if the NFL were to cut him loose. We'll never know but I'd bet that if the NFL told him $25/m take it or leave it, he would take it.

Seriously, who else would have paid him that much and why wouldn't he want another $25m?

(Sorry for the late bump.. been busy.)
