Question for Rugby Fans

I do enjoy watching Rugby, but don't really understand the difference between Rugby Union and Rugby League. In the simplest terms possible (for me...lol), what is the difference? I enjoy both, but acknowledge that I'm definitely an uneducated newbie.
I also love the Rugby 7's (probably more than the others).

There are downs in rugby league like in football. There aren’t any in union. That’s the most fundamental difference. After 6 tackles you turn the ball over. There are more differences like 13 players instead of 15 but that’s the biggest point of differentiation probably.

League: you have 6 possessions, like downs in football, then it's an automatic turnover. High tackles are allowed.
Union: possession does not automatically change with successive phases and a team could theoretically maintain possession for the entire match. High tackles not allowed. Must wrap up and form tackle.
There are more differences, but these are the main ones.

Thanks guys for the answers. I guess I must usually watch Rugby League because I just assumed there were downs in both.
Thanks again!
Thanks again!

A question for the people that answered my original question...what do you think of Rugby 7s?

Just from watching both League and Union the last few weeks, I like League much better than Union.

As a forward (prop and lock) it's not for me. It has its place but shouldn't supercede 15’s rugby. It's like if you got rid of linemen in Football.

Thanks for the response. I truly respect anyone who has experience playing the game. That said, which do you prefer between League and Union?
ETA: After perusing the previous responses, I'm guessing you are a Union guy.

Here is my two cents of Rugby, actually probably more like 1000 cents, but here goes.
Rugby League - easier game to pick up and watch since they have the possession rule. The hits are much bigger in league than Union.
League is smaller though in terms of players, in that Northern England and Queensland and NSW of Australia are the two major areas.
League was professional before Union, and had a head start on some things.
THe NRL is best league for rugby whether Union or League. They actually copy/mimic a lot of the good things from the NFL.
The State of Origin is terrific, and a must watch. Comparable in the US would be the South versus the North in football in a best of 3 match.
The big downside of League is that they really do not have any International clout.
Union - lots of rules, from Scrums to lineouts, offsides, etc. But I will say they do a great job if you are at a match with selling Refs ears so you can listen to the calls.
There is nothing better though than the international side of Union. Six Nations to me is what it is about. I have been to Europe every year since the 90s for matches minus 2 times. When England is in Dublin for a weekend. Or Scotland in Cardiff, etc...the fans are the opposite of soccer, no hooligans. Just people dressed up acting fools in a good way and drinking together.
Lot of leagues around the world, just have to find a team you like.
The All Blacks make it more recognizable then League on the World Stage.
Let me know of other questions, i am a rugby evangelist to get more people into it.

This. I lived in Brisbane for a year and outside of the AFL final, this was their super bowl. It is truly unique.

To fans of Rugby, they are two different games. I tend to enjoy Union rules better.
Now Aussie Rules Football, that’s fun as shite.

Yeah, I've never really watched Rugby League. After over a decade of playing rugby union I just don't get the tackle area (ruck) in rugby league. In union it's the offenses responsibility to maintain possession and guard the ball after the ball carrier is on the ground, in league the defense can't compete for the ball after the tackle.
As a rugby union player, the tackle area (ruck) has always been my favorite part of the game. You have a player from the other team standing still guarding the ball for a clean (and legal) shot.
This means a quicker but less technical tackle area.

Union>sevens>league
Rugby Union does a better job than all professional American sports at officiating, Video review, etc. By far.
A lot different when you get to club level but it comes with the territory.
As violent as it is, the sport is very much about discipline, respect, and molding men. Again does a much better job of that than just about any of the main American sports.

7s is the only real way to get a tournament done in a short amount of time sadly. The games are super quick but it’s all about speed. I play in the back line in a 15s match but I’m a forward in 7s because of the pace.
With that said if you can make it to one of the HSBC 7s tournaments they are a ton of fun

Priest friend of mine, former student, is an Odihambo from Kenya; almost all of Kenya's sevens players are named Odihambo and from his village! They love it.
