During the regular season

quote:

Ivy League coaches have voted unanimously to stop tackling during practice during the regular season, according to the New York Times. The rule now moves to Ivy League athletics directors, policy committee and university presidents to receive a final stamp of approval.

FootballScoop reached out to an Ivy League staff member who confirmed tackling is still permitted during spring practice and fall camp, though the frequency of such practices — as they are across the entire landscape — are declining. The source we spoke with said his team will still “thump” during mid-week practices but will not bring players to the ground.

When and if an all-out, in-season tackling ban is adopted outside the Ivy League depends on whether or not coaches can be convinced it increases the game’s safety will not simultaneously handing them a competitive disadvantage.

The Ivy League will not prove much of a guinea pig on the second front. Ivy teams play just three non-conference games and do not partake in the FCS playoffs, meaning they won’t prove much of a study on whether an all-out tackling ban affects them on game day. On that front, it would have been interesting to see the Ivy League pick four teams to continue tackling during game week and the other four refrain, then study those results over a season or two.

I have no feelings about this, honestly. I just know a lot of you will eat this up.

Does this catch on?

If I was smart enough to be getting an Ivy League education I wouldn't want to bang my head on shite either. My dad's hedge fund isn't gonna run itself.

If i recall correctly, Wisconsin Whitewater never used to tackle in practice and they've won multiple DIII NCs.

Its actually something that is catching on even at the highest levels of college.

It was St Johns not Whitewater. OU used to only go half pads once they got into season with Switzer a few years also, but went back to full.

Young men are going to get hurt. As with everything else, practicing and using proper technique during repetitions ingrains it in the athletes mind.

Would not shock me for the NCAA to make non contact more of an emphasis during spring and possibly even for fall even for power 5.
I could see spring ball being eliminated altogether.

Which high level teams are implementing it?

What would happen to A-Day? The gumps would probably still go sit in the stadium and stare at the empty field.

Ohio State implements it for players that have over a certain number of reps in their career, practice included.

This.

They can wear wingtips and play two hand touch for all I care. I want my future presidents to be concussion free. We don't need another Gerald Ford.

Ford went to Yale law school while working as an assistant on the Yale football staff, served as a Naval officer, had a distinguished political career, and was in possession of all his mental faculties to the end of his life. Some comedian made up a joke about him, and it stuck, but nothing was further from the truth.

West Monroe under Don Shows practiced half shell all but 1-2 weeks a year including Spring practice. Seemed to work pretty well.

You are correct and their coach is the winningest football coach of all time, John Gagliardi. (Now retired) I had the pleasure to hear home speak and got to talk with him afterwards. He's one of the all time great coaches and characters.

Ehhh if it doesn't screw with any of the players ability to tackle/block/etc. I don't see the issue. If not having guys crash in to each 4-5 days a week means less head injuries in the future I am all for it.

I'd rather not have football die, I enjoy it too much.

If I was smart enough for Ivy League, I would not be busting my brain cells on a football field.

Still....this is coming to all levels of football. We will not recognize the NFL game as we know it now in 20 years.
