My favorite three players were Magic, Barkley, & Shaq.
The best of my lifetime was Jordan. Bird at his peak (for nearly a full decade) is probably #2.
I believe Magic’s supporting cast was better than Bird’s. The Celtics should have still won the decade if not for some bad luck for once.

Plus I loved how he’d trash talk guys telling them exactly what he was going to do and then did it.
So I went back and watched old clips of this. Everything ESPN splooges over nba stars doing today is what Bird did on the regular back in the 80s. What he did to Chuck Person's was fricking hilarious.
My pick is Bird. I know MJ gets the hype but the fact that MJ never won a game against Bird says a lot to me.

You couldn't go wrong with either.
Magic always said Bird was better...he could do more things. Bird only said Magic was better because he went by championships...but Magic was not injured in his prime and had better players except for Bird's 1986 team with Walton coming off the bench.
Magic said his best team was 1987. Lakers won the Finals series 4-2 against the Celtics but Bird had a wrecked back and McHale broke his foot. Still Bird led the series with most points and rebounds per game.
The real decider with both in their prime was 1986. But the Lakers lost to the Rockets in the Western Conference Finals. That series would've shown the two at their best and be the argument breaker or helped but we never got to see it...while linked they still had paths not crossing at their best.

Bird stepping to the free throw line down 1 saying "its over" is all-time great moment. Fun fact he originally went to Indiana but got homesick

He got poor sick.
Indiana was a rich kids school. He had $20 in his pocket and a couple of jeans. He would've been considered a Townie. He loves Terre Haute because "they took him in" and "accepted him" no idea if they paid him beyond room and board but it wasn't a hoity-toity school like IU.

Why not both? Sure, Bird was more of a cold killer but Magic had that versatility and that flow where his team just hummed. It's just too difficult, so both. I declare it a tie and since it's my ball, I'm going home.

Bird wasn’t even in college in 1975.

Magic was a 6'9 point guard going against smaller defenders. He was definitely a good player, especially on the fast break. An awful shooter and terrible passer in the half court offense. Bird could do it all.

What is this?
Doesn't Magic boast a higher career shooting percentage than Larry? Awful shooter? Nah
Bad half court passer? Say whattt?
Larry was better overall but Magic could lead the fast break like no other.

Jordan didn't have a team around him in those days but the showtime Lakers and Bird Celtics would've beaten the Bulls of the 90s

1978 Celtics
None of these guys were on the Celtics, the year Bird led the greatest turnaround of an NBA team in history
1978 Celtics
Record 29–53 (.354)
1979 Celtics
Record 61–21 (.744)

Maybe I'm not getting the context or you forgot to add something or you are joking around but Bird played with Robert Parish, Kevin McHale, and Bill Walton..

Both were great. This worrying about who is the GOAT of any sport of any time has destroyed sports media. Makes it unlistenable.

Man I couldn’t agree more. It’s a parlor game. It’s meaningless non falsifiable mental masterbation

For a 4 yr stretch he was the best. Bad back and playing in a more hard nose type game then is played today finally took a toll on his body.

Anybody who disputes this is either a Laker fan or doesn't know basketball. Bird could do everything Magic could do but was a more natural scorer and had range with his shot. Magic was never a long range shooter, had a limited game in the scoring role.

Maybe I am imagining this, but I felt Bird was the better finisher You knew if he had the ball and game was on the line it was over. Magic you never knew,
This. Period. End of story. Bird was freaking clutch.

Awful shooter? Nah
Magic Johnson was not a shooter, pure and simple, rarely did people see him shoot the ball beyond the painted area

Haven't checked the stats but, if this is the case, Magic deserves a lot of credit for being a great paint scorer and driver to the basket. Remember West wanted to stick Magic in the blocks when he came to the Lakers before they got McKinney so his athleticism was tailor-made for that. Bird could score inside as well obviously but I have to imagine him being more a pure shooter than Magic hurt his percentages because of the range he had.

On a TV show not sure if that’s 100 true but was more bias against his height.
It's based of a book that hasn't been contested or disputed heavily and Magic was 6'9 unusually tall for a PG
