Tyson. Ali would have a plan to float like a butterfly and sting like a bee. But everyone has a plan until they get hit in the mouth.

And what would be Tyson’s plan when he comes back to his corner after the first round having not hit Ali anywhere, in the mouth or otherwise, and his face is already raw from eating Ali’s jabs?

And he also called out Don King for what he was.

Tyson wasn’t slow and lumbering like Big George.

Would be great to see what would happen. Sadly, we never will.

I know I’m dumb. I at least know I’m not dumb enough to think that freaking Mike Tyson could beat arguably the greatest boxer to ever strap on gloves. Or even worse to think the Steelers/Patriots is a good comparison

Holmes was irritated, rightfully, IMO, that he wasn't given credit as the great champion that he was during his time.

Same Holmes who let Spinks beat him. Spinks sucked.

ETA: who did Holmes beat that was good? Cooney?

Agreed, some of them them are just really really dumb. Like yours. Mike Tyson isn’t the Brady era Patriots of boxing doofus. He didn’t run some offensive scheme that made offensive from the past look ordinary. It’s boxing, two badass dudes putting on gloves and seeing who can kick the other ones arse.

Even if you used your dumb comparison, Ali would be the Patriots and Steelers. His offense was better, his defense was light years better, his boxing IQ was better, his stamina was better. Tyson was a one trick pony that had a hell of a knockout punch. But like Mike Tyson’s career proved, that only can get you so far in the ring.

We never got to see it but I think Riddick Bowe would have beaten Tyson too. At Tyson’s height, it’s just very difficult to beat those guys.

I wish Mike Tyson would have been able to fight in Roy Jones Jr weight class. If he had been able to cut weight and get in that class I think he could have been awesome knocking out everyone. But the big guys he had to fight that weren’t complete tomato cans at HW were going to be problems

Larry’s jab wasn’t as quick as Ali’s and he couldn’t knock you out with it like Liston could, but it was like a friggin’ piston.

There was a brief moment in time where I think Tyson had it in him to beat any heavyweight on any given night. I’m not saying he would have, I’m saying he could have on a given night. Peak Tyson was a legitimately bad dude. But that window was very short and he couldn’t escape the demons that eventually destroyed him. And he would be way above his pay grade mentally dealing with peak Ali.

I remember Ali as a light heavy on the 1960 Olympics. My money is on Ali, circa 1966-67 over Tyson. Ali’s footwork and head movement at that time were at their best. Ali wins by a decision, or possibly a TKO.

Imagine thinking Tyson could beat the all time greats, Ali included, when Tyson couldn't even beat Holyfield, Lewis, or Buster freaking Douglas! Lmao at these posters.

Cooney actually had superb boxing chops, he just was mismanaged by a crew that protected him before the Holmes fight and badly botched trying to bring him back afterward, he was overwhelmed by all the heat that surrounded the Holmes fight and he never really had the psychological makeup to be a fighter.

FYI, he and Holmes are tight now, really BFFs, they’re involved in some ventures together. I think that’s the way it ought to be when the fighting is over.

Sonny Liston is closer to Tyson than Frazier.

How so? Tyson and Frazier were both under 6'0. Liston was 6'1. Tyson and Frazier both had short arms. Liston had an 84 inch reach, longer even that Ali's. Tyson and Frazier both had unorthodox defenses, and utilized crouching stances with almost nonstop bobs and weaves, Liston stood upright and had a devastating left jab. Watching all 3 of them on film I just don't see the similarities between Tyson and Liston.

This question is so disrespectful. The out of prime Ali that beat George Forman beats Tyson easily. Prime Ali plays with him and then knocks him out within 7-8 rounds. They are not on the same level. Like at all.

I would argue we never even saw prime Iron Mike. He parted with his real coaches and went to jail for what, 6 yrs?

Tyson was shorter than almost all "elite" HW fighters, but he was also more dynamic than arguably all HW fighters. He had power like Foreman, but was much faster. The question is could prime Mike last 12 rounds and win? We didnt really see the best version of Tyson really have to fight that long. The washed version certainly wasn't mentally capable of doing it.
