People like to throw stones from the outside of all this. What if you were a student and this was your program? The whole situation is sad.

honestly dude, the rational side of the fanbase you seem to represent don't need to be out there defending penn state as much as you need to make the crackpots in your ranks understand how bad this is.

the idea that there are people still holding a vigil at the Paterno statue (for anything other than the child victims at least) is the best argument I've seen for the Death Penalty

This sums it up.

I hope there is enough Kool-Aid for everyone at the vigil.

I didn't even defend Tressel when he covered up tattoo gate. So.

Tressel was not to tOSU what Paterno was to PSU

Wonder what exactly goes thru the mind of these students, I'd just wanna hide. This is pretty ridiculous.

There's no reasoning with crazy though, which is why I'm not posting on the rivals forum. I would go nuts trying to rationalize with them.

And tattoo gate isn't covering for a child molester/predator.

Anyway, I'm sure Ohio State would have people saying some similar things, I get that.

It's just pathetic either way.

I guess he's saying that the rational ones are on the premium board only, not the main non-oremium board. Ok.

Well, honestly, you using that message board as evidence of the entire fanbase is like using the rant and saying that's what all LSU fans are.

not standing out in front of the statue, but i have been pretty surprised by the number of alumni and fans that are old enough to know better that have posted on message boards taking "the freeh report is a sham" position.

if you want to talk about the good paterno did, i suppose there's a place for that at some point, but what really surprises me is the vehemence with which some of these people insist he either acted appropriately or is the victim of some kind of witch hunt.

obviously it's a vocal minority, but it really honestly seems to be much larger than i think anyone would have anticipated.

I like how this was put.

I don't think anyone believes all Penn State alumni/supporters are ignorant to the horror of this situation. However, I'm also surprised and disappointed by the defiance the vocal minority continue to display. The Freeh Report details the failings of the prominent Penn State figureheads, yet people like Franco Harris continue to be unconvinced.

If the JoePa defenders want the public to recognize the good he did, they must be willing to acknowledge his incredible failings as well.

Most former players and alumni aren't defending JoePa's actions or lack thereof during the last decade of his career...they're defending their memories.

They're in denial.

Notice that nobody is defending Spanier, Schultz, Curley, Sandusky, or McQueary. But they don't want to accept that Joepa is a pedo enabler.

Imagine how Bama fans would feel if it came out that Bear Bryant was an enabler (or worse, a pedo himself).

I get that. That's why this minority is the problem, not most former players and alumni.

Like I said, Franco Harris is still reserving judgement until the other Penn State officials are put on trial. When you have famous faces like him associated with Penn State and he continues to be skeptical of the evidence, it makes the entire Penn State community look irrational to the general public.

First off...they're dumb and usually drunk college kids...this isn't the alumni folks.

True, but they need to realize how holding a vigil at that statue isn't helping the situation at all and reflects poorly on their institution.

quote:

Second, it's pretty pathetic that if you support anything JoePa did or meant to that University during his 61 years...you are branded Pro-pedophilia...give me a break...what a cop out way to think about things. It's like if you think woman should be able to control their pregnancy...the Pro-lifers label you a fan of murdering babies and nothing else. As if there aren't other considerations.

...kind of a strong analogy. Paterno did a lot of great things for Penn State and is deified by the Penn State fan base accordingly. However, events as heinous as the ones that have come to light over the past few months and the knowledge that he turned a blind eye to it all but tears town my previous notion of Joe Paterno and, honestly, diminishes all of his accomplishments on the field and off.

quote:

It's sensationalizing everything to extreme black and white degrees. That's not life...the people who have made Penn State their life...their relationship to that University and JoePa is more complicated.

In my opinion, Paterno's inaction has given him a justifiably awful reputation. Supporting him at this point is supporting a child molester enabler. It is tough for a student or alumnus to accept that, given how he was viewed in that community, but it's the reality of the situation. They can support all he did for the university, but there will always be an enormous black cloud that envelopes every good that he did for now on.

I agree with you, but everyone loyal to Penn State is a victim. These current students were between age 4 and 8 in 1998, etc and are still kids. They are misguided, but will come to get it...hard for them handle still, that this has happened at their great school. And, they represent a small minority of the student body. Many in the community actually do want the statue to come down, for several reasons.

...This is an Oniion article right... I knew it was bad, but sweet Christ. Does anyone still think they don't deserve the death penalty? This is pretty much what I'm talking about in that their fans need to be knocked back to Earth. The Death Penalty is the only way to do this.

Wow, holy fricking shite. This mentality is even worse. Taking down the statue will not make you a fan, yet having your defensive coordinator rape children in the locker room with his equals and superiors knowing about it. This guy needs a forced vasectomy.
