Fines and banning the coaches/players involved?
They don't have the authority to levy fines. They can determine an athlete doesn't have eligibility to compete in NCAA athletics if they don't meet certain standards. I'm not sure if they can ban a coach, but they can limit their recruiting activities and impose other penalties.
But hey, banning Reggie Bush and Pete Carroll from the NCAA while they're in the NFL would have really sent the right message and was the fair way to handle the situation, right?

So why are you upset with the punishment? An athletic department covered up criminal activity to continue to win football games.
IMO, that is worthy of major sanctions. Why do you disagree?

You are an idiot. That's irrelevant. You called football a privilege. It's not a privilege.
Great cases can be made for the football program being shut down but football being a privilege is not one of them.

They put a clause on Bruce Pearl and Jim Tressell.

Why should the NCAA have that kind of power? Really. They don't HAVE to do anything.

El oh el. Yes, you are free to join the NCAA and participate in college football. 15th amendment dude. It's right there.

The NCAA's system is shite and rarely punishes those actually involved.

He makes good points. However, the NCAA didn't investigate Baylor because a player was murdered either. But the murder investigation uncovered details that were NCAA violations, then their coach tried to cover up those violations and committed many more.

I hate the NCAA because of their inconsistency with penalties imposed. For that reason I have always thought the 6 major conferences would disban from NCAA and form a power conference that would come up with penalties that are more structured and defined.
I really am torn in this case though. I don't think the NCAA has a right to impose sanctions but the way PSU fans have defended JoePa has really made me hate PSU and wish the worst on them. I know it's irrational but it's how I think about the situation. God forbid that ever happen at LSU but if it did the last thing I would do is defend the ones involved.

All I've gotten is "kids were anally raped". That sucks and all, but shutting the AD down will do nothing for them. Neither did removing the statue.
The difference is that the innocent weren't involved at all. The NCAA is punishing them for actions of people no longer associated with the program. They can't do anything with the actual people involved. Tough shite. There is no reason for them to do anything other than for the sake of appeasing the masses.
PLEASE justify that one.

We hold these truths to be self evident. That all men are created equal and have the unalienable right to play college football. It's not a privilege, it's a right.

What kind of power? The ability to make and enforce rules?

you mean the one's that are in the NFL? c'mon dipshit, the ncaa's system is about as good as can be expected considering it usually takes a long time to conduct the investigation. and believe me, the coaches that have been canned following the ncaa's findings tend to disagree with you.
Yeah Pete Carroll is fricked. Bush is wiping his tears on millions. Tressell is devastated.
You're STILL ignoring the point. In this case, the NCAA CANNOT do a damn thing to those involved because they're in jail, dead, or being processed in the justice system. They're doing this just to appease the masses.

Does the athletic department's actions warrant major sanctions?

They have plenty of power but why should they? They're a "private entity" and all but they're being ridiculous with this one. The fact is they don't HAVE to do anything. The culprits aren't within their scope in this case so why do they have to do something?
