The problem is, I agree with you in principal, but in practice it's just too subjective and there is no standard. In 2006 they used resume and the fact Florida won it's conference, last year it was "eyeball" tests. With 4 at least, you will still get the best team in and won't have a bad champion.
8 is more likely to get a bad champ, but even there, most years its not as terrible as it sounds, I don't think in the BCS era you'd have a team with 3 losses in unless they did auto bids for certain conference winners.
4 is still the best imo.
