It's ridiculous to believe this, but even if it were true, you don't check someone like that if you are just skating off of the ice and see them late. You would just grab hold of them.

Meh. He gets right up on him and the legs turn sideways the instant before impact like he saw him RIGHT before the hit and it was too late to avoid. He was clearly woozy after the hit he just took on the boards. I just don't think it was entirely malicious on his part - careless for sure, but I don't think that's rest-of-the-season suspension worthy.

The degree of spin on this is fricking amazing

Unintentional or not the NHL is going to make an example out of him as they should.

But it was definitely intentional

Total shite move. Especially considering he'd just been knocked on his arse along the board and was pouting like some school girl. He made a decision to cheap shot, he took out a 20 year respected linesman, and he should sit five games. What a douche.

20 games is the minimum by rule. I think he gets more than that.

I'll stick to 5 games. Because there is some plausible deniability and he wasn't hurt.

the dude took an elbow to the head and then his head hit the boards. Its entirely possible that he was pretty much skating back to the bench with his eyes closed.

Must be my deeply rooted (read non-existent) ties to the Flames and gentleman/scholar Mr. Dennis Wideman.

Agreed.
How about "hockey-plausible"?

This will be the dumbest thing I read in a while.

Yeah thinking a guy that just took a head shot on the boards might have been a little disoriented is pretty fricking dumb. No way he could have had his eyes closed or anything. Thinking a 12 year vet with no real history of being a thug wouldn't be dumb enough to intentionally level an official in clear view of both benches is the dumbest thing you read in a while? Cool

12 year vet doesn't realize that a zebra isn't an opposing player? Even if he was dazed that's a chicken shite hit to make on an opponent, much less a ref with his back to you.

The problem with the accident theory is that nothing in the video backs it up. It's very obvious when somebody inadvertently collides with someone else because they aren't bracing for an impact. Wideman is clearly coasting for a distance then when he gets within a couple of feet of the official he thrusts his body forward and raises his arms to cross check him. Then to top it off he doesn't even bother looking back to make sure the linesman is ok or to open his eyes and see what he hit (if you're buying the eyes closed thing)

Defense In the Comment Section

Just here to stir the pot a bit on my lunch break.

I also think it looks intentional, but there are some interesting opposing views in the comments section.

On the contrary, the last second jerk looked more like an "oh shite" reaction to me. And grabbing the stick with his off hand is probably second nature when coming off the ice to lift it over the boards when he goes in the door.
