Even though I loathe both of these teams, this game definitely has my attention

The Caps vs Flyers game was good TV last night. Lots of hatred going on in that game.

Wish these 2 teams would meet in the first round of playoffs but I don't think the Caps make the postseason though. They've been playing pretty poopy as of late and have a nasty schedule left.

The Caps, coming into tonight, had gone 4-0-1 in their last 5. If that's poopy, I'll take it.

But, man, they played like utter dogshit last night. Luckily, it only counts as one loss.

One loss & 4 point in standings

& go look at those wins! Only 1 was against a playoff team (Boston) and the other W's against Jets, Panthers & Devils who all stink. Like I said your schedule is brutal but I hope y'all get hot & make it in.

How does someone manage to have the most goals scored in the NHL and then have almost the worst plus/minus at the same time?

Easy - No Defense. But have great special teams/PP & Give up a hell-of-lot 5 on 5 goals!

Ohh Someone - meaning Ovi. All his goals are PP goals & he doesn't know how to play D!

Ovechkin has 44 goals, but a -23 +/- rating, lol. I have him on my fantasy hockey team and always laugh at that. His goals and SOG are so high though that he is still the #2 ranked fantasy player in standard roto leagues.

Who is he talking about?

The top 7 goal scoring teams have a positive +/-?

Oh I thought he was talking about a team.

My apologies.

+/- is a pretty worthless stat

It's not worthless at all. You will never go deep in the playoffs when your leading scorer is -23. That is embarrassing.

The Caps defense is terrible. Ovie is on the ice a lot. Therefore, he has bad +/-. It is a pretty terrible stat (and he does have a positive Corsi and Fenwick, showing that he does well on possession), but he gets killed because he gets double shifted a lot, and there's a ton of chances for the Caps' defense to let up a goal when Alzner/Carlson are off the ice, and Ovie doesn't usually match up with them.

Look at the goal last night. Hillen loses the puck at his feet, fails to pick up his man, and lets the Flyer skate right by him. Ovie skates in to try and backcheck, but receives literally no help from Green, who is apparently checking out some hot co-ed in the 3rd row. Giroux scores uncontested once Holtby skates out of the crease for some odd reason. Milbury kills Ovie for the play, but he was, quite literally, the only player on the Caps playing defense on the play. When OVECHKIN is the most defensively responsible player on the ice, you're gonna give up a lot of goals.

But he's the best player in the world!!!

Jk, only Baloo thinks that. One trick pony.

Yeah, that one trick is scoring a lot of goals. Oh, and winning MVP's. I'd point out that Ovechkin had a higher +/- than Stamkos last year, but really, who cares?

Look, Joe Sakic once scored 39 goals and posted a -40 rating. He followed it up by scoring 48 goals and a -26 rating. Steve Yzerman scored 83 goals in three seasons, and posted a combined -58 rating. Shockingly, both players saw their +/- improve once they played with competent blueliners.

When Ovechkin put up a +45 in 2010, was he a better defender? No, the Caps just scored so much that the team had a better point differential. Over his career, he's +59. Know what that tells you?

Nothing. It tells you nothing.

This.

+/- for individuals players tells you very little.

For a line, it can show you what's going on for that line, i.e. production and defensive balance

One of the most grossly mentioned and used stats across sports because casual fans put stock in it. It's up there with runs scored among others.

Bruins really spanked the Caps, I fear the Bruins will repeat as East champs. Out shot the Caps 41-16, too.

Stempniak and Goc making their Pens debut tonight at San Jose on NBC Sports, puck about to drop, should be a good one.

Lidstrom ceremony tonight was fantastic.
