You're right, nothing wrong with the current system at all.

There's a lot wrong with it, and I've already suggest a much simpler solution than completely changing the scheduling format.

NFC south just sucks monkey balls. Geezus it sucks.

man, I remember how hard Saints fans were crying just a few short years ago when they got destroyed by Marshawn Lynch & the Seahawks.
Yea it's really stupid.
So it would be sweet justice if we get and beat the Hawks at home. Even better if dallas is left out. Mark Ingram can have a game sealing run that looks awesome because the only chance the Hawks have of winning is stripping the ball so they can't tackle him without losing.

08? The year the Fins won the division? Who won the wildcard & with what record?
Dolphins and Jets got in at 11-5. Pats missed at 11-5. I think the Broncos also missed at 11-5 sometime in the past.
Cassel is on the IR for the Vikings. He was the starter until he got hurt. I am sure it is Teddy's team now though.

There ought to be a floor for the record a division champ can have and still be an automatic qualifier for the playoffs. My vote would be a .500 record.
The idea of a team like this year's Saints or Falcons making the playoffs with a record 4 games under .500 ought to make anyone with a mind for fairness uncomfortable.
Wait, the Cowboys are the ones being left out? Nevermind. We're good.

If the NFL is smart and not shortsighted at all for a change, they would have the position that the current playoff format is one of the best in pro sports and it is the most fair and accurate format for determining a champion. If you win your division, you will have proven yourself as the best team out of 4 teams in a 16 team conference and that should always be rewarded with a playoff spot and one guaranteed home game when only 6 teams can go to the playoffs.
With that said, a 7-9 or 6-10 division winner is an anomaly and certainly should not be treated as the norm and indicative of a larger problem. It's extremely and highly unlikely this will happen again for a long time. To change the playoff format would be an overreaction, indigent outrage seeking to punish an anomaly and only hurt the NFL brand and get rid of a great playoff format. It's unfortunate that there's a team that's below .500 in the playoffs but that's just what you get when an entire division is so shitty and its inflating the W-L records of other teams and divisions and not even the best playoff format can account for that. No playoff format is perfect even when it may be one of the best in sports.

You win the division, you prove yourself as the best team out of four teams in a 16 team conference with a 6 team playoff format. There is very little more fair than that.
People are ignoring that all of the entire NFC South's teams being really shitty is not normal and but they are still a part of a 16 team conference competing against 12 other teams and the best team out of those 4 teams deserve to be rewarded.

I'm a saints fan and I had no problem with 7-9 Seattle being in the playoffs and hosting.
They were the best team of a 4 team division and the saints didn't win their division so they didn't deserve to host a playoff game over a team that actually won their division.

Outside of the toe end of the boot, there are more Cowboys fans than Saints fans in Louisiana in my experience.
That boot must not be stepping in Louisiana much because this is a wholly incorrect generalization.
You would have a point if you were talking about Northwest Louisiana or more specifically Shitport instead of the entire state.

Might be for the best, seeing as this is the only scenario that essentially guarantees a restructure of the current seeding system. The NFL could let it slip away quietly into the night if it were anyone else, but not Dallas.
Reseeding the playoff won't help the Cowboys get in anyway. It would just make the Saints a road team.

I know there were talks of expanding the playoffs by 2 extra teams, one for the NFC and one extra for the AFC. Does anyone on here know if that passed and when it might go into effect if it did pass? Just googled and saw where that should go into effect for next season where we will have 14 teams in the playoffs rather than 12 like this year.

A 6-10 team hosting a playoff game is a problem. Setting a baseline that you must go 8-8 as a division winner to host isn't exactly some wild sweeping change to the format.

Cool...all the more reason to make a change and move on.

While I don't necessarily have a problem with division winners automatically qualifying because it's an agreed apon precondition, why does the least shitty of the four shittiest teams "deserve" to be rewarded?

I hope the Lions go 11-5 and don't get in

Who cares? They should have been smart enough to be in the NFC South.
I hope that the Saints go 6-10 and make it in over an 11-5 Dallas just to hear Cowboys fans cry.

I am actually kidding. I think that the whole thing is ridiculous and that if a division winner cannot go at least 9-7 and there is a higher placed Wild Card team, then that division winner should give up their playoff spot to the team with the better record.
Hopefully, the disaster that is this season in the NFC South will lead to a change.

Let's see someone else cry now then.
This is a rare thing, there better be no changes. Winning divisions is still important
