re: Not One 8th Grade Student at the Lebron James Akron School Has Passed a State Math Test

There’s an article from the New York Times in 2019 that talks about how far behind a lot of these kids started compared to others. No idea how it is now, but 29% of the students were special education, and the 3rd and 4th grade classes they highlighted were both in the lowest percentile in test taking when they did start at the school.
Granted, I have no idea what happened since then because you would think at least one student would have to have passed the state math test. I’d be interested to see the growth numbers comparatively to where they were pre-Covid.

Poor black kids don’t math no matter how much money an entity throws at them.
Wrong.
I’ve seen poor black kids do well in Math in relation to the other subjects.
At a school with this degree of funding, the bottom 5% is grossly unacceptable. You are just letting your man crush on Lebron get in the way of legit common sense analysis.

I mean, that is not exactly over the top in an inner city school. Hell, it is not over the top at a school in the suburbs.

I agree.
That being said, did they raise it from 4% to 5%?

Lol you don’t think 30% of an entire schools kids being special Ed is over the top? What school did you attend? I’d assume most schools are way less than 10%

At least they can read the first page of books.

Then get them to focus on trades rather than failing math class
Lebron sucks but y’all as legit as mentally fragile as orange man bad people
Lebron and trump need to be studied to understand how they can make adult human beings turn into emotional pudding

For an inner city school…
No.
And, depending on how close the suburb is to the city…
No.
Lastly, “gifted” also falls under the SPED umbrella.

I volunteered at an inner city school in Los Angeles for University credit in the 90s.
Classes were taught in BOTH English and Spanish until the 6th grade because the teachers said learning English was secondary to learning Math which had to be taught in Spanish because that's all the kids knew and spoke at home.
In 6th grade they were just starting their times tables. That's 11-12 years old.
While most learn it in 2nd or 3rd grade.
It was abysmal and the teachers said parents rarely showed up for teacher-parent conferences out of fear and schooling was treated as simply daycare and free lunches.
When your family would rather you start working as a kid and parents have no education themselves, what chance do the kids have?

classic centrist take. love it.
needs a touch more pompous attitude tho. just a touch. just to let everyone know you’re better than them without taking a side

Look, I like to dunk on LeBron James any chance I get, but this isn’t it. Those kids could be getting world class education and it wouldn’t matter.
Why is money being wasted on them?

quote:8th graders minus three years of no one passing equals third grade?
This fall's class of eighth graders at the I Promise School hasn't had a single student pass the state's math test since the group was in the third grade.
"Not one? In three years?" Akron Public Schools board member Valerie McKitrick asked after that data point was presented to the board earlier this week.
8 - 3 = 3?
I think I see part of the problem.

so i assume the other grades are passing tests then? i don't see the problem

So what you are saying is for a certain portion of the population throwing money at the problem won’t fix it?

You’re getting downvoted and I’m not sure why. Success in school almost always starts in the home

Damn. Just read the replies to my post
LeBron is a POS but my point is these kids were already in terrible situations and going to a school with LeBrons name on it won’t change their situation
It all starts at home and the reason these kids are there is because their home life sucks

Not sure. Probably a publicity thing for LeBron and it’s a major tax write off

I agree
It will never happen, but at some point there needs to be a fork in the road and certain students need to be trained in valuable life skills rather than algebra and beowulf
