Are these people crazy?

If I'm Franklin I would have done much the same thing. People who want to committ suicide are dangerous not only to themselves but people around them. This person would have been using up a scholarship spot for another few years while he undergoes therapy and is no doubt drugged up on SSRIs, etc.

I would have worked something out with the administration to keep him in school but no way am I using a football scholarship to do so....and I'm not keeping him on the team irrespective of what some doctor says.

I kind of agree with Franklin here. If the player was in a pysch ward, he probably wasn’t anywhere near being mentally ready to return to football. Lots of players who get hurt end up being medically retired from athletics and the school converts them to a medical scholarship. The school could still take care of the former player while also no longer having them count against the team’s scholarship limit. Not sure why something like that wouldn’t be appropriate here.

So the kid jumps out of a fricking window, coach wants to revoke his scholarship (which is to play football), and people have a problem with that?

James Franklin is a piece of shite, but this isn’t evidence of that.

You can still have empathy, care, and concern for the mentally ill kid, but also have a team (a business) to run. If the kid is jumping out of fricking windows then it’s safe to say that football isn’t a high priority and since scholarships are limited, that scholarship should absolutely be applied to another player that isn’t jumping out of a window.

this, 100% this.

look kid has a contract....Penn State provides hundreds of thousands of dollars in the form of education, housing, food, nutritionist, strength coach, tutors etc

in return the kid plays football for 4 years.

kid did not keep up his end of the contract

I do not understand why some of yall are getting upset with Franklin over this. Its a hundred plus million dollar business, they have to move on and do whats best for the business.

Most college coaches are pieces of shite. Being a college football head coach is probably the most scrutinized job outside of the US president. For so long, one loss in college football would make or break a season. You probably have to manage around 150 people from staff to players. It's hard to really know who is really at risk of suicide when you spread your time around to that many people plus your own family. That guy's issues were probably just a blip on the radar for Franklin that day.

Is Franklin worth the trouble at this point? He’s been there a decade and has likely reached his potential in the role. Time for PSU to move on, though I’m sure the buyout is ridiculous

Exactly what trouble has he been for them? Their AD and fans/alumni support him.

They are perennially a 9/10 win team that finishes in the top 15 on a consistent basis and will likely be in the playoffs 6-8 times over the next decade.

Are they Michigan and Ohio State? No. But they have essentially been and likely will continue to be the LSU of that conference - a top 3 2nd tier team of a conference.

Successfuly for who?

It hard to imagine the sport surviving without some sort of model like that in place, so successful for everyone long term

That would be hilarious because they would all get paid the same. From the star quarterback down to the back of the long snapper. They’re just entitled and stupid enough to fall for a union.

That’s not true at all. The NFL and pretty much every pro sports league has a collectively bargained agreement through a union and the is still a version of a free market for players to increase their salaries based on talent and situation

Not sure why CFB would be some crazy leap to move to that model when they are fully a for profit venture at this stage just like the professional leagues

And nothing. Nothing. Just perception without substance. Typical.

Oh, and Biden got 81 million votes. Right.

And Trump is guided of everything he’s been charged with.

I know this is not the poli boat but holy cow you guys are lemmings.

Why am I not shocked this type of thing would happen at Penn State

A few months ago I remember listening to a discussion of an Ole Miss player who stopped playing due to mental issues who came to Lane Kiffin to try to play again. It was a brutal exchange by Kiffin and the player was basically told to get out. Some of the head coaches are just despicable people by nature. And can be somewhat ironic when you consider a lot of them have the same mental issues.

And a lot of these head coaches will wax poetic about how their Universities stay alert and have a plan to help athletes through mental problems. More hypocrisy.

I believe it's more of what he didn't do. Like getting rid of a known pedophile on his coaching staff

After Jimbo Fisher got fired, James Franklin moved to the top of the list of coaches who are getting paid a fortune for not much in the way of results.

In early 2001, graduate assistant coach Mike McQueary went to Paterno’s house on a Saturday morning to tell him that he had seen Sandusky fondling a young boy in the football locker room’s shower facilities the night before. The fondling was of a sexual nature. A day later, Paterno told Curley and Schultz: “Hey, we got a problem.” Penn State President Spanier was similarly informed. The four kept the information quiet.

The Sandusky Scandal

You knighting for JoePa is a tough look. Maybe you didn’t know that he knew.

Low IQ take. He’s 88-39 in his ten seasons there - 84-34 outside of the Covid year. He has 5 10+ win seasons and 4 11 win seasons since he started there. He’s finished in the top 10 4 times and in the top 20 2 more times. Outside of maybe 5-6 programs, everyone else in FBS would take those results.

Sandusky retired from Penn State well before he was accused of sexual misconduct with minors. Look it up.
