Are we talking about Nolan Ryan? A lot of people consider him in the top 10. How the hell is he underrated?

Dude is the leader in strikeouts and has SEVEN no-hitters. Most untouchable records in the post-Dead-ball era. I believe a pitcher could break Bob Gibson's ERA record before Ryan's strikeout or no-hitter records.

I think Nolan played like 5 more seasons and 1000 more inning. Per inning Randy was better, but longevity and endurance count for something too.

2.) Who would you rather face in an AB?

Now do Nolan Ryan vs Greg Maddox. One is going to be scary. The other is going to make you look silly.

The hot takes in here are laughable but this shite is ridiculous. Get over yourself, you wouldn’t get the bat off your shoulder, and I don’t care what level you played until.

ETA: Ryan is the all-time leader in no-hitters with seven, three more than any other pitcher. He is tied with Bob Feller for the most one-hitters, with 12. Ryan also pitched 18 two-hitters. He also holds the career record with a .204 BA against.

Ryan had the highest percentage of votes in his first year of HOF eligibility.

Johnson was better although both were very good pitchers. The lefty angle and the championship have to count for something. Also, how incredible were the drafts for the expos back in the days? They had their hands on a lot of great players.

Randy Johnson 303-166 record 3.29 ERA and WAR 101.1

Nolan Ryan 324-292 record 3.19 ERA and WAR 81.3

Randy was significantly better

Would rather face Ryan because RJ had just enough wildness to take away your nerve.

Randy might accidentally get one too close to your head, but Nolan would do it in purpose.

Then he would put one in your rib cage if you complained too much.

I had no idea Randy had only won 64 games on his 30th birthday. That is incredible.

Fun fact that blew my mind recently. The big unit is now following his passion for rock music and photography and is officially a band photographer and goes on tours with acts. I imagine being 6’10, no one ever gets in front of your shot

Found this gem on Nolan Ryan’s Wikipedia page

quote:

Ryan threw two no-hitters in 1973. In the second one, on July 15 against the Detroit Tigers, he struck out 17 batters – the most in a recorded no-hitter. (This record was later tied by Max Scherzer on October 3, 2015.) Ryan was so dominant in this game, it led to one of baseball's best-remembered pranks. Tigers first baseman and cleanup hitter Norm Cash came to the plate with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, having already struck out twice, and was carrying a clubhouse table leg instead of a bat. Plate umpire Ron Luciano ordered Cash to go back and get a regulation bat, to which Cash replied, "Why? I won't hit him anyway!" With a regulation bat in hand, Cash did finally make contact, but popped out to end the game. Cash's teammate Mickey Stanley commented on facing Ryan that day by saying, “Those were the best pitches I ever heard.”

Deion Sanders had a good story about being asked to pinch hit against Randy Johnson in the game Randy threw 20 strikeouts... the Reds that night fielded an entire lineup of righties, and so when the manager asked Deion to pinch hit(a lefty) Deion said "For what?"

Deion gets up and first pitch is a looking strike which Deion said was about 3 inches off the plate. He said he knew he was screwed because if they are giving him 3 inches off the plate you have no shot.

Anyway any left handed batter who faced Randy Johnson talked about how uncomfortable it was. George Brett said it was like someone throwing off a little league mound. But go watch Randy Johnson in his 20 strikeout game facing all righties. Batters were swinging at his backdoor slider that looked like was going to hit them in the feet. The slider was more deadly against righties.

Tom Grieve would talk about facing Nolan and how Nolan's curveball was difficult because it looked like it was going to hit you, which is the thing in the front of your mind when facing Nolan. Then it breaks away into the zone for a strike.

when Nolan was on you couldn't hit him. You had to hope you were facing him on nights he wasn't on, but that was a double edged sword because it also meant you were going to get his wild side and possibly get hit.

I got hit by an 85 MPH pitch in high school in the ribs and it was extremely painful, I couldnt imagine getting hit by a 100 MPH pitch
