One of the longest-running sneaker lines in the industry could be coming to an end after Nike and Kobe Bryant's estate failed to come to an agreement on a new deal this month, first reported by Complex and later confirmed by Nike. Bryant's Nike deal expired on April 13, 2021, exactly five years to the day that his 60-point performance provided an exclamation point to a Hall of Fame career.

Bryant, who originally signed with Nike in 2003 after an extended run with Adidas to start his career, signed a five-year extension with The Swoosh in April 2016. That extension came to an end this month and as it stands it's unclear what the future holds for Nike Kobe sneakers. Bryant's signature line with Nike is one of the longest-running sneaker lines in basketball.

As a part of his signature line, Bryant laced up 11 different models during his playing career and Nike continued to release his sneakers long after his retirement in 2016. After Bryant's death in January of 2020, prices for his sneakers skyrocketed on re-sale sites like StockX and GOAT. In the 14 months since his death, Nike has released more than 10 of his signature shoes with more releases slated through 2021.

quote:

"Kobe and Nike have made some of the most beautiful basketball shoes of all time, worn and adored by fans and athletes in all sports across the globe," Vanessa Bryant said in a statement. "It seems fitting that more NBA players wear my husband's product than any other signature shoe. My hope will always be to allow Kobe's fans to get and wear his products. I will continue to fight for that. Kobe's products sell out in seconds. That says everything."

Nike offered Vanessa and the Bryant estate a deal that would extend the relationship, but that offer fell short of expectations from the Bryant side, according to ESPN.

"I was hoping to forge a lifelong partnership with Nike that reflects my husband's legacy," Bryant said to cap off her statement. "We will always do everything we can to honor Kobe and Gigi's legacies. That will never change."

Bryant and the estate grew frustrated with Nike's approach to the Kobe line since his retirement, feeling like the product was too limited and there was a lack of availability in kid's sizes, per ESPN.

This is silly. Competing shoe companies are going to kill each other for the chance to make money off that brand

Yeah - it's not like anyone else is going to pay for Vanessa Bryant shoes.

And, unless there is something in the 2016 contract to the contrary, I'm guessing that Nike can still sell all the Kobe gear it generated when Kobe (and his estate) was under contract.

Just a guess, but I'm guessing that Vanessa thought she was going to get Jordan-type money and Nike was offering Jimmer Fredette-type money.

ETA:

Just read the full article. From the article --

quote:

Nike, sources said, had presented an extension offer that was not in line with expectations of an ongoing "lifetime" structure similar to the Nike Inc. contracts held by both Michael Jordan and LeBron James.

The KEY WORD is LIFETIME. There was no f*cking way she was going to get Jordan or LeBron type money. And, whose lifetime does she think these deals cover? Once Kobe died, THAT WAS IT. His LIFETIME was over. No one is going to buy shoes designed by Vanessa Bryant. She's just a golddigging whore who let her husband go around raping women for a huge diamond on her finger.

Nothing shows honor like a selling a $180 shoe.

Yeah, no. They don't need the money but if they feel the deal was short of the value then why should they sign it? They'll be fine either way. I'm sure Nike will come back with an acceptable deal

No they won't. In five years, Kobe Bryant will be an afterthought. Other than the "old timers," players in the league at that point will not even really remember him. For damn sure, no one is wearing Converse because of Magic Johnson and Larry Bird. Does either one of them still have a shoe contract. And, BOTH, were as big, if not bigger than Kobe Bryant. Throw in Dr. J as well.

The only players whose shoes will still be around in 20 years will be Jordan and LeBron.

There is NO WAY IN F*CKING HELL that Nike is going to give VANESSA Bryant a Jordan-type LIFETIME deal.

I disagree on a lot of that. His line was extremely popular and interest went through the roof after he died. That is worth a ton of value for at least the next decade IMO. I'd love to hear the numbers being bandied about.

ETA, you are right that Nike does dig in at times. I never thought they would part ways with Federer. But, he must have wanted insane money and they were like, why overpay a guy who isn't going to win more majors? So, he took $300 million from Uniqlo.

Sure it went up RIGHT after his death. We may even see a little bump right after Jordan enshrines him into the Hall of Fame. But that interest wanes. And, with newer players entering the league who never played with or against Kobe and barely remember watching him on TV, fewer NBA players will be wearing Kobes. At that point, the kids who idolize those players will not care about Kobe.

The ONLY player who has kept his line going well after retirement is Jordan. And, Jordan almost invented the $200 AIR brand shoe market. Plus, he was the greatest player that ever lived and will be viewed that way for a very long time. LeBron's shoes may not last long after his retirement -- we'll see.

But, I just don't see people caring about buying Vanessa Bryant designed shoes.

Pretty sure his line was 2nd behind Jordan pre-death as well as currently. He has an enormous worldwide fan base and if Nike would do his regular retro line like they do Jordan, they could give Vanessa a lifetime deal. Trust me, look at the prices on stockx, they aren't going down anytime soon. All this does is make them even more valuable for years to come. Vanessa wants the line more available, instead of so limited, as well as more kids sizes/availability. Thats easy for Nike to negotiate. I think they will work something out.
Kobe, nor his shoes, will never be an afterthought in a few years.
