“Everybody wants to be comfortable, but you’ve got to get used to being uncomfortable if you’re really going to be successful and you’re really going to be good,” Saban said. “I could really relate to that. That’s what we’ve always tried to get the players in our program to do. Some understand it, some don’t.

“Some people use that against us in recruiting sometimes because, ‘I’ve heard you don’t have any fun at Alabama.’ Well, we have fun here. The structure that we have is so the players don’t have too much fun. But at the same time, we’re also trying to create a culture of accountability where the players have the best chance to develop the kind of habits that are going to help them be successful in their life, in their future.”

“I really think the last three minutes of the last show, number eight I think it is, was something I could really relate to, that we could really relate to,” Saban said. “…When they referred to him as, ‘Some of your teammates think you might be a tyrant,’ he paused and actually almost got tears in his eyes when he said, ‘There’s a price to pay for winning. There’s a price to pay for being a leader.’ You have to push people to get them to do things they might not want to do, make them uncomfortable.”

Is this the part where people act like they aren’t both the best ever at their gigs?

This makes sense.

Just as long as Nick knows 2019 LSU is better than any of his teams

I'm sure he'll take all of his championships over one fluke year.

There is a lot of truth in both Jordan and Saban’s statements, however, it is naive to think that they have figured out the ONLY way to succeed. I think that their are several paths, all of which have hard work at the core. There is something to be said for working smart and not just hard. I think that is what O and Dabo figured out.

You can push people without being an a-hole about it. But there is also truth in that when you make people work harder than they want to work, make them do things they don’t want to do and hold them accountable for their own responsibilities; then those people, especially the slackers, aren’t going to like you at all.

Jordan pushed his teammates to the limit yet out worked all of them. He carried his teams and was 100% clutch. Saban pushes his players to their limits but never played in 1 game or outworked anyone on the field. Hard to compare the 2.

Just because he did not play professional football doesn't mean he didn't push his teammates or work harder than other players when he was in high school and college.

quote:

But when Keener and Ross signaled the end of practice, Saban, a senior quarterback, would inevitably stay behind. Sometimes he'd throw extra passes; other times he'd run sprints, and without a word everyone would join in. There was something about the serious-minded Saban, whom everyone called "Brother." He had this gravitational pull that made it obvious how much they respected him and were willing to follow his lead. It's as if he was a blend of Keener and Ross, and most notably his father, Big Nick, who created Pop Warner football in the county. As long as there was enough light to see, he was determined to put it to use.

quote:

There were other captains, but Saban was their leader. And he led much the same way he does now: with strict discipline. He was a perfectionist who demanded the same from others. "He'd get on your arse," offensive lineman Joe Martin recalled.

Somebody needs to tell Nick the difference between controlling and motivating your highly paid professional peers and being the guy at the head of a historical program controlling kids. HUGE difference. In case some of y’all aren’t watching The Last Dance, even Jordan had someone ultimately controlling his future. That’s why this documentary even exists.

ETA: It’s why he didn’t like the NFL. Those guys weren’t afraid to tell him to gfys.

Bear was actually both types.

First coming of Bear was mean as hell, players played like hell for him and accepted him but he drove them like no other.

The second coming (70's and 80's) he was not so much softer but had gotten smarter about how to handle his players. No more two a days during bowl practice as he did at Kentucky before the Orange Bowl game against Santa Clara.

You don’t have to be an a-hole to be the best. Nick is a really good coach but he would have been a piece of shite no matter what he did. No excuse to act like he did to people at LSU everyday no matter what his goals were. I can’t speak to how he behaved at State or Miami or Bama but I know how he was at LSU and he was a total douchebag and really didn’t have to be. Understand that I have spent my entire adult life in the USMC Infantry and as a LEO both State and Federal so I get being rough but you are a football coach and it’s not life and death....sorry.

You are absolutely correct, there are certainly more ways to succeed, but I’d argue that their shared method produces most consistently.

Difference is that Jordan did what he did at the highest level of sports. Saban did what he did in kids football. So you can figure out which one is more deserving of admiration and praise.
