There actually is something to that. The Army filed a trademark dispute before VGK started their first season. Their parachute team is known as the Golden Knights. Eventually, both sides reached a trademark coexistence agreement. LINK
Ironically, VGK owner Bill Foley is a West Point graduate. The consortium he headed that eventually won the franchise is known as Black Knight Sports & Entertainment. Foley briefly considered Black Knights for the team nickname before settling on Golden Knights.

But I was fairly certain the Golden Knights would never be forced to change their name right after they came into existence. I'm sure Foley and his legal advisers thought of that when they picked the name. That would have been terrible optics to scrap your name right after you enter the league.

What got mixed up? Foley wouldn't be dumb enough to pick that name if he knew there was ever any realistic chance he would have to later change the name.

If Foley really wanted to go to the wall with it, I'm sure that he could have won, regardless of what name that he chose. Again, he has West Point ties, so I'm sure that out of respect, he compromised.
