The whistle was still being blown when the receiver's feet hit the ground. It's a completely reasonable response. We're talking a quarter second or less in real time.

It was the right call anyway.

I know The rule, but it’s not like the whistle changed the play.

No one stopped playing because of the whistle

I'd revise that to say "nobody who had any chance to otherwise impact the play stopped playing because of the whistle."

The ball was in the air when the whistle was blown. They blew the call.

Now tell me about the timeout that the Raiders were given wiping out a 25 yard play and a roughing the passer even though no ref blew a whistle to stop the play.

The DB gave up because the guy he was guarding was open by about 5 yards and the ball was already crossing the goal line. The whistle was blown when a ball going about 60 feet per second was a foot away from the receiver.

I am not sure why anyone would be outraged by this. It was going to be a TD whether the ref blew the whistle or not. The defenders were not in a position to make a play in that short of a window. I am actually glad that common sense prevailed. In the end, we just want the officials to get it correct.

NEWS FLASH!

The vaunted NFL doesn't even follow its own rules.

The only way they would have messed things up is if they wound up calling the play dead and taking the td away. Whistle shouldn't have been blown.

Exactly.

Given that the speed of light far exceeds the speed of sound, the player heard the whistle, if he heard it at all, after he saw the TD was unstoppable. The whistle had zero impact on the result of the play.

The whistle was blown before he caught it and the DB quit but he wasn't close enough to have stopped the pass anyway. So basically they didn't follow their rules but it would have been worse if they did. If they had it's possible the Bengals would've lost the game on a BS whistle. Those refs were atrocious all damn game and should be relegated to pee wee football.

NFL dead-ball instructions are discussed in Rule 7, Section 2, Article 1 of the NFL rulebook. Part of the rule states that "when an official sounds his whistle erroneously while the ball is still in play, the ball becomes dead immediately."

It would've been a TD but the whistle blew.

Whistle blew as the ball was crossing the goal line in the air...and Raiders players pointed at the officials immediately after the catch.

But its the Raiders. They get the strictest interpretation of the rules against them even that interpretation is erroneous (see Tuck Rule) but when a strict interpretation of the rules helps them...its ignored.

I agree that the whistle didn’t have a big effect on the play, but this statement is laughable. Like we don’t have eyes and ears. They’re just CYA’ing here. I would have loved to hear the actual conversation from the officials on this play.

And if you watch the side judge he blew the whistle prior to the sound delay on TV, which made it seem much later than it was.

The NFL is better than the govt give a horrid response let a few people get pissed for a day or 2 and then continue to keep moving forward.

That "crew" was horrid, if they is the best 30% they have it makes me was to almost apologize to Ron The Bigness Cherry.

True but that's not how it works. Rules are rules...this is the first time I've seen an inadvertent whistle being swallowed by officials. Usually they just apologize after the game. Them the rules. Teams get screwed. Bengals wouldn't have been the first team to lose by an inadvertent whistle and a TD called back. See that Broncos game years ago. You can't suddenly be arbitrary about rules. But its the Raiders and the League loves fricking them over ever since Rozelle.

I'm a big fan of the "spirit" of the rule. In this situation it was the refs that committed the foul, the Bengals should not been penalized for the frickup and the whistle did not affect the play in any way.

They got it right by allowing the td.

This is reason #127635 that the NFL shouldn't have mixed officials in the post season. None of these guys have worked together before.
