Teams line up with both tackles off the line of scrimmage and false start every single play. I’m not talking about holding calls or no calls. It’s 2025, referees should be held to a higher standard than they were in 1984.
Whats your proof that refs aren’t held to a higher standard than 1984? The game is far more tightly refereed than back then. The standard for roughing the passer, unnecessary roughness, pass interference, and several other penalties was much lower than today.
And in 1984 you would have been able to see like 25% of the penalties you see today because there weren’t as many cameras, instant replay and slo-mo wasn’t as good, and there was no HD tv.

Actually hold the referees accountable. Players and coaches arent allowed to complain about officiating. The league ALWAYS has the backs of officials. There’s no public discipline or grading.
Exhibit Z
This is proof that those that complain about the refs the most are generally ignorant of how officiating actually works.
And explain how allowing players to complain about refs would change officiating for the better.

That’s kind of the point of my post. We, the fans, aren’t allowed any information about the officiating, while there are injury reports, open practices, media availability, etc for the teams.

It’s a comment on the general immunity refs are afforded.

What information do you need? Their weekly grading? You aren’t allowed information on how players are graded either.

Just because players ( who aren’t unbiased ) aren’t allowed to criticize refs doesn’t mean they are immune. Refs are graded, and the best are awarded postseason roles. Those that repeatedly fail to make the postseason lose their job.

In the words of Captain Frye from "The Rock,"....Great. We're not gutless. We're incompetent.

Pass Interference needs to be reviewable. It takes .2 seconds for another team in a booth to look at it. Hell it would be decided before the announcers even got done drawing on the screen.
They would rather blow the call and make cover for the refs than have them picking up a couple flags here and there.

Four Referees in Controversial Rams/Saints Game Have Ties to Southern California
Fans are concerned about the NFL's decision to allow four referees with Southern California ties to judge the contest.

If the four refs from Southern California graded so well, why not let them work the AFC Championship Game instead and have the AFC Championship Game officials officiate the NFC Championship Game instead. The NFL still gets their top graded officials, but they simply swap games.

With Super Bowl Sunday quickly approaching, the controversy surrounding the NFC Divisional Championship is still fresh, with the latest development only adding to the drama.
quote:
On Sunday (Jan. 27), ESPN reported that concerns are being raised around the NFL's decision to allow four referees with Southern California ties to judge the contest between the Los Angeles Rams and New Orleans Saints. Per the piece, sources believe that their connection to the Los Angeles might have played a role in the no call on Rams cornerback Nickell Robey-Coleman's blatant pass interference against the Saints' Tommylee Lewis.
quote:
Many are wondering privately how head referee Bill Vinovich who lives in Newport Beach, CA, was paired with LA County resident Patrick Turner as well as Dan Arnold and Todd Prukop who live in Santa Barbara and Mission Viejo, respectfully. This lineup goes against the leagues' extensive list of checks and balances placed in effect to ensure a fair game. The skeptics are interested in hearing why the NFL decided to assign the refs to the Rams/Saints game and not Kansas City/New England or why the officiating crew was assembled in the first place. However, the NFL sought to quiet these rumors with a short but firm response.
quote:
"Officiating assignments are based on performance," a league spokesperson said. "Not geographic location."

If you're ignorant enough to think there's no grading, I really don't know what to tell you. The league has their back when they're firing them?
You think officials don't get criticized? You ever read this board? Watch Sports center or any game broadcasts?
The media thing is stupid. Why, so they can go argue with a room full of ignorant reporters over a judgement call? That would be productive. That's the supervisors job.

The NFL officiating has been questionable for decades. At this point, there is no reason that they aren't leveraging technology to improve the officiating.
They could have RFID tags on the ball that can be timed with goalline and first down marker cameras, to figure out spotting the ball. That's something that would take minimum investment from what they already have in place. There are probably many other things that could be done if they chose to spend the money.

It’s a billion dollar company
They could have physically fit prime full time refs. Easily.
Instead they have middle aged men part time refs calling the game
That, to me, is indefensible but I’m sure I’m about to watch posters here defend it

The two high school refs or NFL bots in this thread will he here shortly.
It’s 2025, the shite that should have and could have easily been done decade ago would stop 95% of the complaints.

It's not that hard to see if any patterns emerge. Someone can run the stats and analyze how teams are penalized - frequencies, types of calls, results after calls, etc, etc. The stats will show it clearly if there is anything non random. Certainly some teams get penalized more than others due to their play, but it should be obvious is there is a finger on the scale.
Multiple teams have publicly mentioned they take certain referees trends into account when they game plan (famously Ernie Adams for the Patriots).

It is insulting and preposterous to hear conspiracy theories that somehow 17 officiating crews consisting of 138 officials are colluding to assist one team.

The discipline is public enough if you know where to look, but I'm certain you're one of the fanboy dickbags who would be satisfied with nothing short of a public flogging.
Why didn't you touch on grading, didn't fit your narrative?

Serious question, you think you can just throw a 22 year old into an NFL game and let him call it?
Also, who are you seeing calling games who isn't physically fit?
