NFL owners to vote on sky judge, onside kick alternative May 28

Not really sure what to think of the sky judge. Seems like it could potentially lengthen games if used very liberally.

The competition committee sent a report to teams last month, in which it stated support for further analysis of on-field officials being assisted by officiating personnel who would have access to a video feed. The officiating department is working with on-field officials to figure out how video feeds could assist them. So, even if owners do not pass either of the new proposals outright next week, it is likely a version of some kind of addition to the officiating crew could be tested in the preseason for possible further implementation.

The other intriguing proposal involves providing an alternative to the onside kick, which has largely faded out of the game since changes were made prior to the 2018 season that prohibited kickoff teams from getting a running start. That change was made for safety reasons, but it also made it nearly impossible to successfully execute an onside kick. In the last two seasons, just 10.4 percent of onside kicks were recovered.
There is now some momentum for a proposal from the Philadelphia Eagles -- which has in the past been sniffed at by some as too gimmicky -- which would allow the team that is trailing in the game a way to maintain possession after scoring by successfully converting a fourth-and-15 play from its own 25-yard line. That could be done a maximum of twice per game.

Ban any form of onside kick. So stupid and gimmicky way to have undeserving teams win.

Would be the gayest thing ever. Whoever proposed that needs to be shot.

F that 4th and 15 proposal. Sounds like something the XFL would do.

The shark would officially be jumped.

Love the onside kick alternative option. I'll vote for it.

It hasn’t already?

Why not just limit the amount of players the receiving team can have within 30 yards of the line where the ball was kicked off to even the chance between kicking and receiving teams?
Also, anyone else remember when the Hula Bowl used to have the losing team receive the kickoff after it scored?

Seriously
10-15% is probably where it should be
Or you could play the Saints and your % automatically goes way up

It's one of the most exciting plays in football, even if the success rate is extremely low.

frick the NFL, it's refs, it's judges, and it's review process

I think the Falcons accounted for 90% of that number in their game vs the saints.

I’m always for any help to fix the terrible officiating in the league. Not a fan of the onside kick alternative though. 10% seems like a solid number for them to be around.
This also appears to be as good a time as any to remind of tGOAT onside kick and one of the ballsiest calls in Super Bowl history

The thing I really hate about the 4th and 15 proposal is that it gives more ability to a possibly incompetent officiating crew to change a game.
There are far too many ticky-tack penalties that result in an automatic first down for me to sign off on this.
You could basically give a team a free possession with one illegal hands to the face.

Honest cold truth: Owners just care about ratings and revenue. What fans hate or don’t hate is secondary.

The game is 1/3rd offense, 1/3rd defense, 1/3rd special teams.
If they can't perform on special teams they deserve to lose.
