I'm more in favor of this rule rather than just letting the other team talk it on the 20-30 yard line.

A team down multiple scores late now has a much better chance of keeping the ball than they did recovering an onside kick.

It would be complete BS and I hope they don't change it, but its not like picking up a 4th a 15 essentially would be drastically easier than converting an onside kick.

And now the Super Bowl is about to get underway. The players are getting set for the opening 4th down....

As an added bonus, they'll take full advantage of the new rule by cramming 6 more goddamn commercials down your eyeholes before the next play happens. The NFL is ruining football for me.

The NFL has almost entirely ruined the fun of going to games.

This pretty much sums up my feelings on that rule.

Onside kicks are recovered at a higher rate than 4th and 15s are converted.

Depends on who is trying to convert 4th and 15. Drew Brees and the Saints have a much better chance of getting 15 yards on 1 play than the Arizona Cardinals do. And now that you can fair catch onsides kicks if they don't bounce twice (or is that just a college rule?) they're more difficult to convert as well. Regardless, this would be dumb.

I like this rule. Less touchbacks. More returns. Eliminates the "lucky" onside kick. I think it will make teams more aggressive with going for it on 4th down as well.

by Tampa Bay coach Greg Schiano. Instead of a kickoff, the team that scored would then take the ball on its own 30-yard line in, essentially, a 4th-and-15 situation. In other words, they could attempt to keep their offense on the field and try to pick up 15 yards, at the risk of turning the ball over on downs; or they could punt.

This would never get the players' union approval, as it would do away with too many roster spots. If he thought the league's fans got their panties in a wad over the faux refs, he'll flip out when they go nuts over this proposed rule.

The 30 is too close. If you don't get the first the other team sends out FG unit and pretty ruins any chance of a comeback. Then punt it and most likely pin the comeback team inside their 20.

Agree completely, getting rid of the kick would completely suck.

This is only college. The NFL can still do the "spike" kick where they just try to get it on one high bounce.

Show me the statistic that says that.

During the 2005 and 2006 season when an onside kick was EXPECTED (because this is what we are discussing) they were recovered only 12% of the time. And this was even before the disallowed bunching all of your players on one side of the football, now you can only have 5 guys on each side.

Show me the stats that say a team couldnt convert a 4th and 15 10% of the time?

Can you imagine if this retarded bullshite was implemented the year the Saints won the Super Bowl? The onside kick after halftime wouldn't have existed. That play changed that game.

Secondly, how would you start the halves?

Look, if we go under the assumption that eliminating kickoffs is a certainty, why not just bypass the kickoff altogether and forgo this stupid 4th and 15? Since the onside kick mechanism must remain in the game, the scoring team gets two options--turnover possession to the other team at their 20 or lineup for an onside kick.

The punt or 4th and 15 conversion is no safer than a kickoff, IMO.

You must've heard Mike and Mike's take on it this morning.

Yeah it would totally suck...surprise onside kicks would be completely removed from the game and those are the ones that are MUCH more successful than anticipated onside kicks.
