Tuesday's "NBA Tip-Off" doubleheader averaged 5.6 million viewers between NBC and Peacock, the network announced Thursday. That's reportedly the league's highest mark for its opening night doubleheader since 2010.
That 2010 "Tip-Off" included LeBron James' debut with the Miami Heat and drew 5.7 million viewers.

Tuesday's audience reportedly peaked with 7.1 million viewers in the 10:45-11 p.m. ET window, when the Oklahoma City Thunder finished a double-overtime win over the Houston Rockets. In total, the Rockets-Thunder game, which featured Kevin Durant's Houston debut against the defending champs, averaged 5.9 million viewers, while the Golden State Warriors-Los Angeles Lakers nightcap averaged 5.1 million viewers.

What caused this surge? Being on an easily accessed channel instead of a streaming app or cable? Or maybe people tuned in to see Shaq, Kenny and Chuck? I thought NBA viewership was dying.

It could be more wishcasting by the media...constantly trying to hype things up by using lies and half truths. Im sure ratings reporting can be massaged and communicated in deceptive ways to make the numbers seem higher than they really are.

It was the Luka hype and not having LeBron on the court for the Lakers game

That John Tesh music is sure bringing the crowd back, huh?

Can’t wait for Lebron to retire, NBA going to be so much better

I think the nba on nbc nostalgia helped
We shall see if it lasts

To illustrate how far the NBA has fallen, 2023 LSU vs Iowa (Reese vs Clark) drew 16.1 million eyeballs.

That's more of an illustration of how interest in women's college basketball spiked due to Clark.
Anyway, it's always interesting to see how people here leap into mental gymnastics when their usually exaggerated narrative isn't confirmed 100% of the time.

For sure this. People wanted to hear the music and see if NBC was going to do the cool intros like they used to do.

For sure not.

It was an epic game too.
NBA is fun despite what the old heads want to claim.

And anyone who says college basketball is a better product is insane. The tournament is fun by its own very nature, but the level of basketball play is atrocious.

Yup. And in college they have 30 sec possessions vs 24 in pros. NBA game is faster. Plus in college some players are rarely moving the ball. And college has some awful refs.

Nielsen also changed the way they report viewership numbers in September, so all prior year comparisons are now going to be inflated. They are now including streaming numbers:

I was the biggest CBB fan you will ever meet. A lot of people in my family didn't love NBA because "all they do is travel, they should raise the rims" blah blah.
My uncle, however, was a huge NBA fan and a Mavs season ticket holder. He took me to a game in probably 2002. Dirk. Nash. Michael Finley.
My brain nearly melted. Honestly, ruined CBB for me, outside of the tourney. NBA is one of the most fun in person sporting events there is.

They’re using Nielsen guesstimates which are notoriously inaccurate along with their own internal streaming data which they can make say whatever they want.

I was also. A few things ruined the game for me. One was the one-and-done; every top program became a never-ending rotation of 7 new guys every year. I watched UNC basketball religiously, but grew tired of showing up every year and going who the frick are these guys.
Super athletic, but no skills and no team chemistry. Second was the three, which is still an nba problem, but at least they can shoot.

I've taken quite a few casual basketball fans to rockets games and they are all surprised at how fun they can be. Even my son likes them and he watches zero sports outside of F1

Nostalgia was a big part. I tuned in and was texting with several buddies during the theme song and all the interviews. It felt like the old days. It was really cool to see.
