NBA question - who was considered the GOAT before Jordan?

I'm not old enough to remember what life was like before the Jordan era. Was there a consensus on who the greatest player of all time was before he came along?

Wilt mostly. Possibly a few for Magic.

Wilt probably.
Although since Magic is the 2nd best player of all-time, IMO, so he should be the answer.

It could arguably be Bill Russell since the Celtics won 11 NBA Championships in the 13 years that Russell played in Boson.
He revolutionized the game by controlling the game through rebounding and shotblocking.

Kareem should at least be in the running.

Depended on who you asked, individual was Wilt but Russell was considered best of team players. There was a time that the Doctor was considered most skilled to ever play

Russell and the Celtics beat several Laker teams for championships that had Wilt Chamberlain, Elgin Baylor and Jerry West.
In 1972, those 3 Lakers would be considerred 3 of the top 10 NBA players of all time.
While the Cletics had a great supporting cast, the Celtics won their 1st NBA Championship Bill Russell's rookie year.
Russell dominated games defensively and rebounding. His teams simply won. Russell made his temamates better.

It was Wilt. No one said Magic.

Was Magic ever definitively considered the best player in the league when he played? I'm thinking not: there was Kareem, Dr. J, Bird and MJ.

quote:You're right. I'm sure that not a single writer or analyst in history ever thought Magic was the GOAT. Not at any point in his career, whether it would be when he was leading his team to all the Championships, his multiple MVP Award, playing all 5 positions at an extremely high level, being regarded by anyone with a brain as the greatest PG in History, etc. What was I thinking. Oh and here's a LINK to an ESPN list with the following statement:
No one said Magic.
"It could be argued that he's the one player in NBA history who was better than Michael Jordan."
So I guess there is at least one depending on how many worked on that list.

I remember Magic's days, and I don't think many, if any, considered him the greatest of all time. When I was a kid (born in 1980), Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell were the two names that were thrown around when "best of all time" was brought up, and it was the same until about 1993, when people started throwing Jordan's name in there.
Perhaps I'm misremembering, but I never thought Magic was the GOAT; I went from Wilt/Bill to Jordan.

That's not what he's saying.
Magic and Jordan essentially played at the same time. Magic came into the league 5 years before him.
When Jordan had risen to the best player in the league, Magic hadn't even retired yet.
Before Jordan's time = before Magic's time.
Wilt was regarded as the GOAT.

quote:But when was Jordan widely regarded as GOAT? Wasn't quite when he left the first time so it had to be during the 2nd run, well after Magic had already retired.
