quote:Dale Brown said to his basketball camp in July 1992 that Jordan was the greatest of all time. That's the first I ever heard anyone other than Bulls fans say that, and it was pretty much the consensus after that.
But when was Jordan widely regarded as GOAT?
That was months after Magic retired. But up to that moment I would have told you either Wilt or Russell. Some may have thought Magic, but they were in the minority.

Some people were already calling Jordan the GOAT when he retired in '93.
I think Magic was the 2nd best player of all-time, however that doesn't mean he was regarded as the GOAT at the time. Honestly, the whole "GOAT" thing really never was that popular of a discussion until Jordan retired and guys like Kobe came along.
GOAT went from Wilt to Jordan.

It started to become popular opinion in '93. "The greatest player of all-time" has shockingly retired from the game of basketball. Heard that a lot.

Ugh, please don't remind me of that 32 game abomination. Was ten times worse than Jordan with the Wizards.

can I change my answer to Billy Paultz?

And I can guarantee you that some people in the south called Pete Maravich the greatest player of all-time. Some still do.

Someone was a Rockets fan in '81.

Wilt = greatest stats
Russell= greatest winner
Jordan = greatest combo of both
Russell= greatest winner
Jordan = greatest combo of both

That's not what he's saying
Thank you. During Magic's playing days, he was not considered the GOAT. He didn't win the MVP until 87, which was like his 8th year in the league. Dr J and Bird were considered the best players in the league in the early to mid 80's. By the late 80's it was Jordan and Magic, swapping MVP's for a couple of years.
Measuring players based on rings was not the norm back then. Where as today, people ridicule Lebron for not winning at title yet, back then people wanted Dr J to get one because they thought it was a shame such a great player hadn't won one
The first person I remember hearing calling Jordan the GOAT was Jack Ramsey during the 91 finals. By 93 when he retired the first time, it was the consensus view. Before that Wilt was the consensus with Russell getting some votes.

Russell and the Celtics beat several Laker teams for championships that had Wilt Chamberlain, Elgin Baylor and Jerry West.
If by several you mean 1, that's correct.
Chamberlian wasn't traded to LA until the 68-69 season. That was Russell's last, but the yes Celts did beat the Lakers that year with Wilt, Baylor and West

Kareem has better stats, more finals appearances and as many championships (more if you count college).

I was talking about how awesome Jerry West was during the playoffs earlier. He lost several Finals to the Celtics simply because the Lakers were outmatched (the Celtics were the most stacked NBA team ever -- '27 Yankees-ish). It's why Elgin Baylor doesn't have a championship.

If so, I was there that year. I think it may have been 1993 though.

Great player. Top 10.
But no argument for GOAT IMO. The pace at which they played back then was insane and helped to inflate those numbers when comparing them to the pace they play nowadays.

In 1972, those 3 Lakers would be considerred 3 of the top 10 NBA players of all time.
While the Cletics had a great supporting cast, the Celtics won their 1st NBA Championship Bill Russell's rookie year.

One of you is learning NBA history from Bill Simmons...but which one?

I think it is funny that a certain group of posters here love Simmons yet conveniently don't want to talk about how he believes Rose is the MVP.

Also, I think most who like him, like him for the entertainment factor.
