It's a fair question but the league is so stacked with talent expansion won't hurt like it did in the 90s.

That flow of talent doesn't seem to be slowing, either.

Its become such an international game that you are getting consistently great players from elsewhere

Players won’t sign with Seattle due to the 10% income tax on millionaires.

Shams Charania
@ShamsCharania

This first vote will allow the league to explore purchase processes for Las Vegas and Seattle. There will then be a potential final vote later in the year to finalize transactions to 32 teams -- if bids reach necessary threshold. In both voting rounds, 23 of 30 governors must vote in favor.

Keep in mind yes the upfront money to teams is good. But then the TV pie is split 32 ways vs 30 ways so you might lose money if TV deals aren’t increased.

And don’t forget they’ll have an expansion draft. Each team can protect X amount of players and the rest can be drafted by the new teams. There would be limit how many players can be taken from each team it might 1.

Since both teams are in west that means 1 team currently in west has to move to eastern conf. Minny/Memphis to me seem like best candidates.

Then you have to redo all the western divisions. I’d love to see OKC/Seattle in same division but regardless, that would be a fun hate filled rivalry. Sports loves those

California has 14% and New York, 11%. They don't seem to have a hard time getting players to sign there.

Makes sense to move Memphis to the East since they’re on that side of the Mississippi.

They should also vote to shut down the money pit known as the WNBA.

The 30 existing teams will see a decrease of $15 million a season by adding two teams under the current tv deal.

That’s the math. A $15m cut in revenue for the foreseeable future in return for an immediate influx of $500m.

Is that $500m per team or league? If it’s per league thats $16.7m per team. And if per team that means new teams put in $15b? That seems high

Are you high

Its per team. The franchise price will be 7-9 billion or so per team

That seems wrong. The avg current franchise value is $5.52b. The 4th highest valued team is worth 6.9b meaning 27 teams are valued less than the number you listed.

Um, so is New Orleans (other than Algiers).

And Minneapolis and St. Paul are on both sides of the Mississippi.

The bigger issue is distance to other teams. The closest western conference teams to the Minnesota Timberwolves are Denver, OKC and Memphis, each about 700 miles away. Meanwhile, Chicago and Milwaukee are 300 and 350 miles away, Indiana and Detroit are 510 and 542 miles away, and Cleveland is about 600 miles away.

Memphis and New Orleans have Western Conference teams relatively close by: Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, and OKC.

When 80-85% of the Lakers sold recently for $10 billion, then that helped set the price for expansion teams in the NBA’s eyes.

If a 100% ownership stake in the Lakers is worth $12 Billion, then an expansion team should be worth at least half of that. Then you add in desirable markets like Seattle a Vegas and the expansion value increases.

- Expansion fee = $7.5 billion
- Two expansion teams = $15 billion
- $15 billion split between the existing 30 franchises equals each team receiving $500 million.

That may be true. I just posted the current values. If expansion teams are willing to pay that much power to them. And it would increase value of all existing teams by default
