For those in the DMV...this has been a big bone of contention for years..

Orioles not paying for old TV fees and Nationals not being able to sell...

With this resolved, would expect Nationals to sell and get their own network. Should finally be able to spend where they need to be (Lerners were billionaires but would not spend their own money).

Unfortunate timing for the nationals when TV rights deals are being crushed. Especially with diamond media Bally/FanDuel collapse.

Be curious to see where they end up, guessing some sort of streaming deal. Might do decent as first mover. Amazon had bought up some of the old bally markets already

Does anyone in DC and Nova care about the Nationals or is it more legacy Orioles fans in the region from the days before the Expos moved to DC?

Finally! Hope the Lerners sell quickly. Can’t stand them. Just don’t tell to that loser Ted Leonsis.

The nationals are at 22 and the orioles 19 in average attendance so they are functional but not top tier teams by any means.

Yeah leonsis sucks. He’s like an anti Arthur blank. Wants everything to be premium and it is priced that way. He knows he has a wealthy fan base and bleeds them dry.

But the people in Nova aren't driving to Baltimore for a game on the regular, but they would definitely watch the Orioles on TV. Feels like this is a win for the Nationals as an organization while no fans actually care cause they're still watching the Os.

The Orioles averaged close to 4 million fans for season after season after Camden Yards opened.

Then years and years of finishing 4th or 5th in the AL East turned off a lot of their fans. They didn’t even try to be competitive for a couple of decades. That will turn off even the most loyal fans.

You have your hardcore DC natives that had maybe been jonesing for a team, and quite frankly the Nats are old enough that some can now claim to have grown up with them, but that’s a small section of the base. I’d say the fan base is largely casual. DC is a pretty transient city so you’ll get a lot of people that passively root for the Nats and going out to a few games a year is a nice social thing to do. It helped when the Nats were really good for a number of years. However, I pretty much only go when the Braves are in town and now that the Nats are bad they’ll often be outnumbered by expat fans of other teams.

When the Nats won the NLCS a few years back a local station interviewed some people celebrating outside Nats Park. One drunk guy was asked how long had he been a Nats fan. He answered “since today!” Sums it up pretty well.

I think this is a pretty accurate assessment. I was stationed in DC for a year (2018) and the crowds were pretty good. Of course having the roster the Nats had helped the attendance. The last Nats game I went to was in 2023. I got 3 tickets in the hospitality suits for like $45 a piece off of seat geek. They sucked but I enjoyed the overall experience.

Some of the worst owners in sports. They simply don’t care. How do they try to draw fans during these shitty years? Raise prices on concessions and tickets.
