As London's The Times reported this week, this year's women's champ is set to sign a new clothing deal with the company, and not just any clothing deal -- the largest in the history of women's tennis, worth $8.5 million per year:

Osaka, from Japan, already had significant marketability as an Asian star, and that will only increase after her US Open success. The 20-year-old's clothing contract with Adidas is up for renewal at the end of this year, while an announcement is due on Thursday on a new partnership with a global automobile company. Bonuses will now (also) be triggered in her existing deals — Yonex, Citizen and Nissin Foods Group are among her sponsors.

Williams herself was ranked atop Forbes' most recent list of highest-paid female athletes with approximately $18 million in 2017-18 earnings. According to Chief Marketer, she is under contract with Nike for what was reported to be $55 million for up to eight years.

I'm guessing hers will be the first athlete deal where her line isn't made in China.

Author doesn't know Asia. It's not - oh gee, you fit an American census profile, we are now best friends.

But she'll be a Japanese hit...oh wait, they sort of hate corrupting as they call it.

She's targeted to the American audience (where inter-marriage is no big deal compared to Asia) not the Asian audience if people have travelled and know their history of reception from outsiders and the issue of race in Asia. Bi-racial Japanese being huge in China or Japan...damn, ain't nobody watch Kill Bill?

Makes sense. She's a marketer's dream right now. Young, talented, and racially diverse to appeal to multiple demographics.

People in Japan have been very supportive and positive of her Japanese heritage. They loved it when she tried to speak a little Japanese. I’m aware of the racist attitudes there, but it’s different for celebrities, especially following huge success.

Also, while you’re right that China might not care about her Japanese heritage, in the rest of Asia (and in Southeast Asia in particular) its a huge advantage. Japanese + American + Biracial is basically everything that Southeast Asians admire all rolled into one

When asked for comment, Serena called Osaka a thief.

Wonder if Serena will break her racquet in disgust, blame men & pout like a child.

Perhaps the WNBA players need to pick a new sport.

She was born in Japan. She moved here at age 3.

Her mother’s entire family resides in Japan.

There is literally no part of her that is America.

Her dad is Haitian and she was raised in the home with her Haitian grandmother. She claims Florida herself

True. Instead of referencing Kill Bill, he should've looked at how Hines Ward was treated in Korea when he came back as a super bowl champ vs how his family was treated when he was a child.
