I thought that starting # for the Saints looked a little low, but with so many sites using different figures/projections I just assumed I had outdated info. With that said, does this chart show the Saints $60M over and the ability to get up to $100M under?

It’s a harder charter to translate than the last one but the vertical is tracking how much total cash they can clear out with restructures, so the 100 mil cleared would be minus the 60 mil they are currently in the hole for

Too bad the packers rarely do shite in free agency because he's just the guy they need. D line has been garbage aside from bursts from Gary every now and then.

Would be like the second coming of Reggie White for that defense

Watch out for the Commanders. They could end up landing Garrett, and Higgins or Metcalf

Gonna be a tricky trade to pull off by any team. Browns are going to take a pretty big L on the cap sheet if they trade him, and they are already super tight up against it

I'm confused. Why would they take a cap hit if they trade a player and hypothetically not retain any salary?

They currently have him signed up for 2-3 void years which they have previously used to even out to cap hit for previous year bonus/restructure

When you trade the player, you still owe that money to your cap sheet, you just now don’t have the benefit of leveraging those Void years so it all hits immediately.

And technically from that point you have “cap savings” but also leave behind dead cap so the browns would have more dead cap from the trade than cap savings until 2028

He sees the writing on the wall, Cleveland will fail to compete for the rest of his career. HC and GM get fired next season, then several years of more mediocrity

Skins have so much money to spend Myles come on down to DC. I’ll forget you tried to kill a guy on the field.

When a player gets a guarantee in his contract, it’s supposed to hit the cap right away. But it’s very difficult to fit these large guarantees in a hard cap so the NFL allows teams to spread this cap hit over the length of the contract (ie if you have a 50 mil bonus on a 5 year contract, they can spread out the bonus hit to be 10 mil for the next 5 seasons instead of 50 mil hitting the cap right away)

So there are accounting ways to get around the issue even further, the most common now being the void years. Teams will add poison pill void years to a contract- these are set to void the remainder of the contract as soon as that new league year starts, thus giving you the ability to spread that cap hit even further across these dummy years (take that same 50 mil across 5 years, add 2 dummy void years to the deal and you can now spread the hit across 7 years instead of 5)

Now when you trade a player, the new team doesn’t inherit that cap set up, the bonus money is consider paid out already by the original team. So the team trading them doesn’t technically lose more cap space, they just lose the ability to spread out that hit across the remainder of the deal. Whatever is left of that bonus has to be paid out and count against the cap immediately

Now what makes it a little more confusing is that these bonuses are also not including the other compensation in a players deal such as base salary or performance bonuses. So there is a level of relief the Browns get from Myles Garrett’s future unearned compensation (ie base salary and performance bonuses). So while they will gain this amount in “cap space” because they no longer need to have those cap holds, they now have an immediate cap hit of the spread out bonus numbers. And for a vet the bonus number on a restructured deal is usually going to have very little base salary and a high bonus, because that’s the whole benefit of spreading the cap hit is it allows you to keep the base super low and keep you under the cap despite handing out these massive contracts

The term Dead cap is basically the amount of cap hold on your books from a player who is not on your roster anymore.

There’s like 100 more things involved in there like expected performance bonuses vs unexpected and post June vs post June but that’s about as streamlined as I could get it in one go
