This is the absolute best part. These people were naive enough to think we wouldn’t end up exactly where we are today.

At what point do we dispense with the fiction of these players being students?

It’s a pure Capitalistic environment at this point. Let it continue and the market will settle. No need to over regulate it. Let it ride.

The problem with this mindset is we're not talking about capitalism, we're talking about sports competition with unequal resources. It wont even out because teams arent starting from the same place. You will get more and more separation until the bottom 90% decide it isnt worthwhile and quit. Pro sports have a salary cap for this reason.

if you thought it was unfair players were getting paid then this is a good outcome.

The Transfer Portal is more to blame
for pure free agency, but even then it’s fair.

Then you’re a complete idiot. Many here predicted that. It was so obvious.

Do you mean like watching the best players jump into the Magic Portal every year so they can officially take requests for the highest bidders?

Sure, that's economically sustainable.

I think most people are just pissed about the transfer portal and not NIL
NIL and the transfer portal are both fine, if the other didn’t exist. Having both is the problem. NCAA needs to limit transferring with immediate eligibility to graduate transfers or if a head coach leaves/gets fired.

But now you also have the NCAA president supposedly about to propose that schools themselves be allowed to make unlimited direct payments to players. So now it’d really be a pro league, but with no salary cap.

Um, you just described exactly how capitalism works in the real world.

Nil sucks! It has and will continue to ruin college football/athletics.

If nil is here to stay then do away with athletic scholarships and let those self entitled turds pay their own way with their nil money. Do that and eventually the “cream” will rise to the top and those that actually have a functioning brain will prevail and make something of themselves while those that have to be lead around by their noses by their “handlers” will continue to amount to nothing and be broke bums as usual.

You want your nil money then welcome to the real working world and start paying your own way with your own money. Oh, and say hello to the irs while you’re at it, lil college “athlete”, because your true free ride is over.

Capitalism does work for an economy. We're not talking about that dummy. We're talking about a sports competition where teams need to play on an equal playing field or its stupid to even play the game.

I disagree. I think the level of money that made college football what it is today grew from school pride. There was an irrational amount of money flowing into the programs which can only be explained by something irrational in terms of investment return. There was a relationship there between players and fans that wasn’t purely transactional that I imagine will dissipate as the years go on, seems that way already.

Times change. Roll with it or get rolled over.
Looking forward to the future Saudi College football league!

You're beef is with the NCAA for refusing to make any compromises at all or create any framework for justifiable NIL and getting destroyed 9-0 at the SCOTUS.
