I don't know. I can't think of any truly bad trades he's made. And he got rid of Fehr and Fleishmann at the height of their values, both in astute moves. He acquired Arnott for nothing and then solved the 2C problem longterm by trading Eakin, who is a mid-level prospect. I think he's been decent at trades
He's free agent signings have been pretty defensible. He admitted to overpaying Ward, but he fit a dire need and added toughness. He got Vokoun for nothing, but he decided to suck and then got hurt. He got Brouwer for below market value. This year, he picked up Wolski and Fehr again in low-risk, high-reward signings.
Really, his biggest problem is that this team will live and die by its three big money players: Ovie, Backstrom, and Green. Green and Backs have been hurt, and Ovie saw his production crater under Hunter. I think he's still all mixed up from that. Just let the guy go and play and hockey. Stop over-thinking things. Just let them loose.
I'm not sure about the country club given the Hunter era. But Oates has got to find a way to get soemthing from his top line. His bottom 2 lines have scored 4 goals. His #2 line has scored 2. His top line? Nothing. The secondary players are coming through, Backstrom and Ovie need to produce. Like, now.

It's been a crazy 1st period, no doubt. Oilers have had the better of play by and large, to be honest. They looked sharper in their PP opportunities, and but for a fortunate block, they nearly put one in an empty net when Quickie was caught out.

True dat. Still waiting for that forecheck that the Kings were laying on opponents during the playoffs last season to show up in this condensed season. That was one of the keys to winning the SC. The other being Quick looking like "Vezina Smythe" most of that run.

BTW, anyone else find it funny the nhl is smashing records with TV ratings? What happened to the boycotts?
