Edit 10/9: In a major announcement, Matchroom Pool tweaks a rule, and now Russian-born Fedor Gorst (FargoRate 840) is now eligble (and has agreed) to play for team USA in the Mosconi cup.

Starting a thread for all things billiards, anything from professional matches to leagues to playing with your friends in a bar.

On the professional side:

US Open 9-ball tournament is currently going on, but with some drama.

It’s a 256 person field and there aren’t enough referees to watch every match, so in the cases where there is no ref they designated the Opposing player as the referee. Perhaps unsurprisingly this has lead to a few incidents.

This is a Mosconi cup seeding event, and already one Mosconi hopeful on the US side (Shane Wolford) didn’t make it to the final 64. So, for now the US Mosconi Cup team still appears to be:

SVB, Woodward, ??,??,??

Chris Reinhold (who is now taking up shop in New Orleans it seems) made it to the final 32 and is now punching well above his weight. The top player in Louisiana (Tony Chohan) is primarily a 1-pocket player and doesn’t partake in many (if at all) 9-ball only events.

Put Billiards back on Espn.

Loved watching Pearl, Efren Reyes, Archer and others back in the day.

Loved watching Lee and Allison Fisher, the English Women's Snooker Champ who came over here and dominated the 9-ball circuit for a long time. Lee, AKA "The Black Widow" has always been a class lady, on and off the table.

Too bad Jeanette Lee has been having some very serious health issues for a few years now with Stage 4 ovarian cancer that has been determined to be terminal in her case.

They hardly ever show billiards now after years of being so popular, but they put that dumb shite called "Cornhole", Scripps Spelling Bee contest, ax throwing, etc. but very little billiards.

Earl Strickland was OK to watch, until he went into "Stupid Mad Mode". One of my favorites is Efren "Bata" Reyes for his incredible shot-making ability and creative bank shots when he looked to be totally snookered. He's long retired now and nearing his 70's.

Efren istill plays every once in a while, but age is for sure catching up, he did do DCC this year and was pretty good.

And....a link to the famous Z-shot from Efren:

Earl just got taken out by Jayson Shaw at the open:

Matchroom

I miss the good old days where ESPN was for mainstream broadcast sports, and ESPN2 showed sports we could all go out and play now if we wanted to. (pool, bowling, darts, etc..)

I still watch Efren’s matches on my YouTube recommendations every once in a while. He was lights out with his banks and placement.

I miss billiards being on ESPN back in the day. I'd watch it a lot.

I used to play a lot in Nola all the time but my friends I played with all moved away so I usually just play by myself or someone random.

I'm a huge pocket billiards enthusiast and have been very fortunate to have played and/or spent time with greats such as Johnny Archer, Darren Appleton, CJ Wiley, John Brumback, Chris Melling, Nick Varner, Tennessee Mike Massey, Charlie "Hillbilly" Bryant, Corey Deuel, Shane van Boening, Stan Shuffett, Danny DeLiberto, Freddy "The Beard" Bentivegna, Billy Incardona, and many, many more.

Never been more than a solid local player, but had some nice moments and won a few tourneys. Definitely, definitely nothing big. Been lucky enough to get "zoned out" a few times and experience what the human body and subconscious mind can do when your conscious mind just gets out of the way.

Thank you for starting this thread, btw. Thought about making one over the past few years, but pool seems so niche nowadays that I didn't think I'd get any responses.

Nice list there.
Efren is my favorite player. Him being so humble is what I liked. Man that guy could do some kick shots. I made one the other night he’d be proud of. I’m just a novice player though.

The problem is beer number 8 tells you that you need beer number 9 - and it’s all downhill from there.

It’s niche but it was popular enough for a while, a ton of people who aren’t avid followers liked catching every once in a while during the ESPN days.

They should at least get the Mosconi cup back on ESPN, even if it means watching the US get steamrolled.

I know he’s given lessons at the Wherehouse in Covington, and for sure Buffalos - I can’t imagine Lacy’s would be out of range.

I had a 2-rail kick through traffic on the 8 that I nailed a few weeks ago in a practice rack (bar rules). The 8 was a hanger but both 1 rail kick paths were blocked and jumping wasn’t allowed.

Generally I don’t like bar rules, but I do like the “opportunity” to try some ridiculous offensive shots. If I was allowed to play defense or jump I would have tried that vs. pulling an Efren, but alas it worked and man if felt good!

Its terrible they never have it on anymore considering the amount of garbage on that channel.

Used to play about 6 days a week at the poolhall but life got in the way. I have a table in my house and I play the least amount I ever have in my life

To the guy asking about bayou, yea they still play there. Dunno about Lamberts anymore but I used to play league there about 15 years ago. The new league place I think is kennys just off of Airline.

I think that one thing which has hurt the popularity of pool is the mismanagement of the APA. Instead of adapting their handicap system itself to get more
accurate ratings and combat manipulation (sandbagging) they came up with a convoluted system where each individual match was worth up to 3 points depending on the race score, so that “winning” was no longer about winning 3 of 5 matches but how many “points” were scored.

The handicap system was also designed with the idea of promoting team turnover to grow the league which may work well in larger areas, but had drawbacks in smaller markets where the player pool isn’t as big. Obviously it was also problematic when you had groups of families/friends who liked playing with each other and no longer could.

There are other leagues out there and other good handicap systems which have been developed, but none of them have really stepped up to challenge the APA.

I think the biggest “failing” of these
leagues in comparison to the APA is that none of them have a true national team
tournament event.

Loved watching women’s 9-ball. Got a signed ball from my favorite, Little Devil Girl (Ga-young Kim). Meaning I bought a signed billiards ball at auction - I did not whip out my nutsack and have her sign my balls. Though I’d be down for that as well.
