The handicap system was also designed with the idea of promoting team turnover to grow the league which may work well in larger areas, but had drawbacks in smaller markets where the player pool isn’t as big. Obviously it was also problematic when you had groups of families/friends who liked playing with each other and no longer could

Just upping the limit from 23 to 25 (like TAP), and letting only one SL-7 to play per match would fix a lot of that. Would allow for an average skill level of 5 which is about where a casual player will max out.

USAPL seems to be growing on the Northshore, has a national championship in Vegas, and uses Fargo for handicapping. Although, even though there’s a handicap the overall quality of play is higher so I’m not sure it’s as friendly as the APA is for absolute beginners.

In todays news: Russian born (but current US resident) Fedor Gorst will play for Team USA at the Mosconi Cup.

A rule tweak from Matchroom (probably to cause exactly this) means that people with dual residency can pick their representative country, but must keep that country for 5 years.

Fedor immigrated to the US when Russia invaded Ukraine and has since been approved for permanent residency on the basis of extraordinary ability.

Even 24 might be an improvement, and I agree with you on limiting the number of higher level players as an offset. I also think the APA should consider half-level handicaps (3.5, 4, 4.5, etc) as well.

What I’ve heard about the play quality in the local version of that league echos what you have said, with the addition that it’s not as friendly to casual and lower level players (in addition to absolute beginners).
