Most successful small market franchises

Smaller markets obviously have a tougher time keeping their superstars/ attracting top free agents to play there. The Pelicans are one of the best examples, their last two superstars have forced their way out and nobody wants to play in New Orleans. Eric Gordon for example hated every second of playing in NOLA. Even trash can juice Lonzo Ball has asked not to be traded to the Pels. The NFL seems to be the best league for smaller market teams to have success. Off the top of my head, here are a few examples of successful teams from small cities.
- Green Bay Packers
- San Antonio Spurs
- New Orleans Saints
- St Louis Cardinals
- Buffalo Bills (back in the day)
- Oklahoma City Thunder
ETA:
Oakland Athletics
Utah Jazz
Pittsburgh Steelers

Historically speaking, the Saints don’t belong on that list.

Important factors for small markets:
-history (Green Bay, St.Louis, etc.)
-community (is the city full of a great culture despite size?)
-smart management

You left off the Cincinnati Bengals. Why?

That may be true, but since 2006 they have been one of the better franchises in the league. That’s a 13 year run minus the bounty gate shite and a handful of bad seasons

If you’re talking historically, the Oakland/Kansas City/Philadelphia A’s have to be up there. 14 WS appearances 9 WS titles, 3rd all time.

It was just the first ones that come to mind. Laying an egg in every playoff game probably makes them seem not as good.

The Blazers and Jazz have been among the most consistently successful NBA teams over the last 30 years, even though neither has won a championship over that time. But both have multiple finals appearances.

I would put the Reds on the list before the Bengals, and I wouldn't put the Reds on the list.
