Dwight Howard. He could barely dribble a ball and never learned how to shoot a jump shot or free throw. Ironically, he was quite the athlete in his prime.

Dude would scarf down hot dogs, drink beer & smoke cigarettes in the dugout, then go and hit bombs or strike out the side. That alone puts him in the GOAT conversation.

I'm beyond shocked and embarrassed OP has even 6 upvotes.

You used this as an argument he’s not overrated?
Yeah, sort of proving the point.
That's an insane % of votes for his actual on field career. I mean Babe Ruth got 95% of the available vote and Jeter got 99%? I tell you, New York media can make a career.

Jeter is so overrated he's underrated at this point.
I'm quite sure I didn't coin this phrase, but I was on this train around the time that it was. I was all aboard the "Jeter is so overrated" train for a long time, but when everybody else jumped on board, I realized it had gotten ridiculous. He was really, really fricking good.

Guy somehow slayed literally all the pussy and never got caught up in the back pages. That's honestly more impressive than his baseball career.
Without question. He's in the Hall of Fame of One for what he was able to pull off in that regard. Much respect.

Meh, Jeter was pretty clutch when it counted. His defense was maybe average.

I’m more impressed that a fat slob who lived off hot dogs and beer was able to do all he did.
Going back to that time frame I’d say Jack Johnson. The line of guys he fought as Champion were a disgrace. He’s culturally significant but people use that to try and make his resume something it’s not.

The Pilejumper, Ray Lewis, has to be up there.
The Tyson fanboys won't like seeing his name in this thread, but Iron Mike is definitely overrated.

Oscar De La Hoya comes to mind.
But no one considers him among the best that lived. Dude fought everybody that was worth fighting in his career. For the Pernell Whitakers of the world where Oscar won and maybe shouldn't have, there's that Mayweather fight where many believe Oscar may have bested him. Dude was legit and fought anyone in the way. If Ali is the greatest with his losses Oscar at least deserves a little leeway with his considering the opponents.

Oh no maybe. Not a man to a tee in that watch party thought Sweet Pea lost.
I mean the judges scoring was ridiculous. Only outdone by the Chavez fight where Whitaker clearly won. Boxing is ridiculous if you don't eliminate the fame by knocking someone out.
116-110, 116-110, 115-111

Bo Jackson.
So many people want to call this guy the GOAT. He is the definition of overrated. His percieved greatness far outweighs his actual performance on the field.

The runaway winner. She lost to 16 year olds kids.
Also is only 10th all time in goals and even being that high is due to stat padding. Add in refusing to admit she was washed up and leading a coup against the best coach we ever had, and she's a net liability.

Jeter was a good (not great) SS. The fact his team never had a losing season have very little to do with his 15 homers and 77 RBI every year.

lolwut?
Make a list of athletes who were all-pro NFL and all-star MLB at the same time. I’ll wait.

It was Pro Bowl, not all-pro. Big difference.
And he made the all star game once. Made the pro bowl once.
Thanks for proving my point. The 1990s Nike marketing team was really good.

Yep. His best wins were likely old Holmes and Light Heavyweight Spinks. Not too impressive.

quote:What happened with Ruth and them was atrocious regarding HOF voting, but we are seeing a shift where if someone is a certifiable HOF, they are getting more votes. Voters are no longer holding grudges or leaving off a unanimous choice only because they know they will get the requirement. So many voters making their votes public will make for higher percentages. Jeter was overrated during his career and was behind his contemporaries such as Alex Rodriguez, Miguel Tejada, Nomar, Ripken, etc. However, he also hit .310/.377/.440 over a 20-year career with almost 3500 hits and eight top-ten MVP finishes. It helped that he was well-liked by all of the media and was only left off of one ballot.

Next year, you will see Ichiro receive 100% or close to it. Then it is lean until 2028 when Albert Pujols is eligible. He should garner 100%, followed by Miguel Cabrera in 2029. Both players are well-liked, but I could see a voter leaving Miggy off only due to his dependency on alcohol.

....and to think most only remember him for HRs. Before he became solely known for homers, he was probably one of the most effective pitchers in the game.
