Personally...I'd take golf in a heartbeat but then again....I wasn't born outside the US. I've seen soccer matches in Argentina, England, Italy and the US and was impressed by the passion of the first three fan bases but overall it doesn't do anything for me. I do think it funny that other replies on here are about no one caring about golf if Tiger isn't playing or can't name the obscure major winners. Who can name the roster of the last WC winners? (w/o the aid of the internet!)

I could get a good amount of the starters on all the winning teams since the first World Cup I watched in 1998.

An individual gets 3 (maybe 4 if they're lucky) opportunities to play in a World Cup

Ha! That's if you are lucky. The competition to make the squad in countries like Germany, Argentina, Spain, and Brazil is so fierce you may only get two cracks at a World Cup.

In fact, its hard for me to find a sporting achievement to top being a player on a world cup winning team.
For me, I think the winning the World Cup would barely edge out winning the Stanley Cup.

Argentina replaced 19 of 23 players between 2002 and 2006, and I think most of the returning players were on the bench.

I can't see there being many outside the USA an Canada who would share that opinion.

My dad is from Argentina. He wanted to hang Maradona for leaving Cambiasso and Zanetti at home.

Messi is the man, but Mascherano is the captain.

I may not remember it correctly, but I thought Maradona was playing Zanetti quite a bit before the World Cup. I remember being surprised he didn't make the cut.

The England Argentina game from 1998 is still one of my favorite games. Zanetti's goal that tied it was one of the many memorable moments.

Agreed. And I'm not one to give France any more credit than I have to.

British Open is more prestigious world wide than the US Open.

I think it's kind of hard to compare an individual championship to a team championship.

What about winning the Triple Crown? That's gotta be up there in prestige.

Who gets the prestige? The horse? And i don't know if that's true it may be a slightly more international tournament, but the US Open is understood to be the most difficult golf tournament in the world

Yeah. The horse. As always.

And difficultly doesn't matter. British Open goes back further. It's about the history of the game of golf, which Europe is very proud of. Not to mention, the weather conditions often make The Open Championship more difficult.

I'd bet many Europeans would much rather win the Claret Jug than a Green Jacket. And Ive seen polls where behind the Masters the British Open edges out the US Open on which major players would want to win.

It's true. I was in Prague, Czech Republic this summer and hockey is actually just slightly more popular than soccer. They love their soccer but they also love the NHL.
