An individual gets 3 (maybe 4 if they're lucky) opportunities to play in a World Cup. A quality golfer may get 40+ chances at a major. I'm not sure why some are really trying to debate this.
It's a pretty stupid comparison really and seems to be more of an excuse to bash golf. The World Cup is an absolutely HUGE worldwide event and it makes no sense to compare it to an individual sport anyway.

I would choose winning a major golf tournament the way Francis Ouimet won over everything. Especially back in that day. Such a bad arse book, and also a great movie.

When I first saw the movie, I thought there was no way that could be true, but damned if it wasn't.
One of my go-to tidbits about golf came from the book. The Country Club at Brookline was originally a polo and horseback riding club. They built a small 4-hole course (I believe) when golf was gaining popularity. Anyways, the first tee shot off the first hole EVER on the course was a hole-in-one. No one seemed impressed when it first happened, because as they understood it, that was the point of the game of golf. Hit the ball in the hole. The guy who hit it would never get another ace again.
